For the first time, a Belgian company will have to answer in court over allegations that it bribed foreign public officials in Africa.

Yesterday, the Brussels Council Chamber referred all 14 defendants of the Semlex case to the criminal court. They will face allegations of bribery of foreign public officials, money laundering and tax fraud linked to a contract for biometric passports in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Semlex is a Brussels-based company that provides biometric documents such as passports and driving licenses to governments and international bodies.

In 2020, 51 Congolese citizens joined the proceedings as civil parties. They have since been joined by organisations including Transparency International and Transparency International Belgium.

Intensifying Israeli military airstrikes on Gaza in recent days, coupled with a surge in violence in the West Bank, have further inflamed an already devastating situation for civilians in Palestine, including our colleagues at AMAN الائتلاف من أجل النزاهة والمساءلة: أمان (Transparency International Palestine).

People in Palestine are bearing the brunt of a humanitarian crisis shaped by large-scale military action, prolonged occupation and restrictions on freedom of movement. The lack of effective accountability for settler attacks and settlement-related violations entrenches a climate of impunity.

This reality not only makes it more difficult and dangerous for our colleagues in Palestine to operate. It also makes their work championing integrity and accountability more important than ever. At times of crisis, corruption can divert scarce public resources away from those who need them most. Work to monitor how humanitarian assistance and post-conflict reconstruction funds are managed and hold authorities to account is crucial.

As a global movement fighting for a world without corruption, we believe that everyone has the right to be treated with dignity and to live safely and freely in their country.

We stand with our colleagues across the region in calling for an end to the violence and for human rights to be respected in line with international law.

They didn't lose their jobs to changes in the economy. They lost them to alleged corruption.

Transparency International is supporting more than 1,000 Namibian workers as they seek formal recognition from Icelandic authorities as people harmed by corruption.

Between 2012 and 2019, Icelandic fishing giant Samherji is alleged to have bribed Namibian officials for exclusive fishing rights. As a result, Namibian companies lost access to fishing quotas, and thousands of their workers lost their jobs. This is known as the “Fishrot Scandal.”

This is what corruption can cost: families, homes and futures.

Oil just hit $100 a barrel again. You keep paying for it at the pump, in the supermarket, on your energy bill.

In November, governments meet at COP31 to decide what's next for fossil fuels. But there's still no lobbying register, no conflict-of-interest disclosure, no independent ethics oversight at these talks. This means that the world's biggest polluters can help shape the room, with zero obligation to say where their interests lie.

We're calling on Türkiye and Australia, COP31's hosts, to fix that before November: public interest declarations, transparent procurement, an open lobbying register, independent oversight.

A fossil fuel phase-out is possible. Follow us for more updates ahead of COP31.

🔵 Corruption is evolving. So is the fight to stop it.

In 2025, Transparency International supported 14,000 people affected by corruption through our Advocacy and Legal Advice Centres. We also helped drive more than 60 changes in laws, policies and institutional practices, including the end of EU golden passport schemes.

Concentration of power doesn't just threaten democracy. It fuels corruption. That's the thread Nobel laureate Daron Acemoğlu – member of TI’s International Council – drew in a recent conversation with us.

In his own words, the seven largest US corporations are now bigger than any organisation that humans have constructed in the past; larger even than the British Empire.

Firms that were never elected and never entrusted with that power can now shape public decisions directly. Acemoğlu calls concentration of power the question of our time. So do we and that’s why we're fighting it.

Imagine being told that the only way to get your grades, healthcare or freedom is to provide a s*xual favour.

For too many people, this is a reality.

Sexual corruption is the abuse of entrusted power to demand or obtain s*x or s*xual favours. It can happen wherever there is a power imbalance, turning access to public services into an opportunity for exploitation.

In this video, we explore the realities of s*xual corruption, its impact on survivors, and what must change to end it: safe reporting systems, accountability for abusers, and stronger protections for those most affected.

Heatwaves aren't a surprise anymore. They are a forecast for the future: hotter, more frequent, longer-lasting.

Climate change and the burning of fossil fuels have a direct influence on abnormal temperatures. This is exactly what scientists have warned for years. So why is the policy still lagging?

Part of the answer is manufactured delay. Fossil fuel actors have systematically used their influence to weaken climate ambition at the highest levels, including inside the UN climate negotiations.

COP31 in November is the next test. We know what's needed: robust conflict of interest policies that keep fossil fuel lobbyists out of the negotiating room. It's time for the COP31 Presidency to lead by example.
