⚽ “When I was their age, I had never even seen a pair of football boots.”

Ajay, 24, grew up in the same conditions as the children he now coaches in Sindhupalchok, Nepal. Today, he is a football coach with Terre des hommes' Sport for Protection project.

“As children, we played barefoot or in slippers, with damaged balls or balls made from socks. We used to say: 'If Pelé could play barefoot, so can we.'”

Through football, Ajay helps children build confidence and mutual respect. When the project started, many boys and girls felt uncomfortable playing together. Today, they communicate openly and support one another.

By creating safe and inclusive spaces through sport, our Sport for Protection project helps children challenge social norms and strengthen their self-esteem.

Today, for World Refugee Day, we want to let a child speak for herself.

Shahd and her family had to flee Syria and seek refuge in Lebanon. This was before the conflict in Lebanon escalated.

Her story is shared in the slides below.

No child should have to flee to survive. We stand with refugee children and families. Support our work: https://www.tdh.org/en/get-involved/donate

🎙️Our new podcast is out.

Behind every statistic on child marriage or gender-based violence is a girl with a name, a story, and people fighting alongside her.

In this episode of The Field, our host Isabel sits down with Rana Alhelsi from Afghanistan and Jiniya Afroze from Bangladesh, both country office directors, both women who have spent years working for girls' rights in deeply complex settings.

They speak honestly about what girls face, what progress looks like up close, and what it takes to work for change from the inside. They also share their own stories: why they do this work, who inspired them, and what they would say to the girls they meet every day.

The Field is Terre des hommes' podcast on child rights and humanitarian action. Find it on your favorite podcast platform:

Today is World Day against child labour

In the region of Sindhulpalchok, Nepal, children’s future seems predetermined: child marriage or a patch of land to cultivate.

Yet a simple ball is turning these rules on their head. Thanks to Terre des hommes’ Sport for Protection initiative, the football field erases distance and social hierarchies. ⚽️

After training, the pace slows down. Every week, Khagendra organises study circles to tackle topics that are sometimes complex: the risks of unsafe migration, child marriage, the risks of child labour...

“We draw parallels between the field and daily life so that they can absorb the information we want to share with them.”

Join us in fighting against child labour worldwide. Because all children have the right to a childhood.
