From the cockpit of a solar airplane to the signing of the Paris Agreement.

This was more than a symbolic exchange. It was a turning point.

In the middle of the Pacific, flying day and night without fuel, Bertrand Piccard demonstrated that what once seemed impossible was already reality. At the very same moment, world leaders were committing to a new path for climate action.

That convergence changed everything.

Because this adventure didn’t stop with a flight.
It gave birth to the Solar Impulse Foundation.

A mission built on a simple conviction: the solutions already exist. What we need now is to scale them.

Flying around the world without fuel proved it was possible. The Foundation exists to make it happen everywhere else.

Applications are now open for the 4th edition of the Pioneer Awards.

The Pioneer Awards celebrate organisations that implement Efficient Solutions across sectors, recognising their pioneering role in advancing ecological sustainability. They honour innovators and adopters who go beyond ambition to action, demonstrating that clean solutions can deliver both environmental and economic value.

Awards are presented across five sectors:
- Agrifood & Natural Environment
- Building & Construction
- Industrial Processes & Consumer Goods
- Mobility
- Utilities (Water, Energy, Waste)

Whether you are:
- a solution provider implementing an innovation with a client
- an organisation integrating a cleantech solution into your operations,

Selected finalists will take the stage at the Pioneers Forum on November 26th in Lausanne, gain international visibility, and showcase their impact as replicable business cases.

There is broad consensus that the technologies required for the ecological transition are already available. The challenge lies in creating the conditions for their adoption at scale.

This is the core mission of the Solar Impulse Foundation: to show that protecting the environment strengthens competitiveness, and that clean solutions can be economically profitable.

The Global Impulse Program, led by the Solar Impulse Foundation and supported by the Service for the Promotion of the Economy and Innovation (SPEI), builds on this approach. It focuses on a group of Solar Impulse Efficient Solutions developed in the Canton of Vaud, offering tailored support to accelerate their international deployment.

Since 2024, the program has been working with these solutions by mobilising the Solar Impulse Foundation’s global ecosystem to increase their visibility and facilitate access to financing and market opportunities.

Meet the 2025–2026 cohort:

Different sectors, different technologies, but a shared challenge: demonstrating that the ecological transition makes economic sense, and scaling that logic beyond borders.

In the coming months, we’ll be taking a closer look at these solutions as part of a broader effort to highlight how innovation can move from availability to adoption.

🌊 A historic step for the ocean. A turning point for humanity.
Today, the UN High Seas Treaty officially enters into force. A landmark agreement protecting marine biodiversity across two-thirds of the world’s ocean, beyond national borders. A powerful reminder that multilateral action can deliver for the planet.

🤝 What does it change?
The treaty establishes legally binding rules to conserve marine life, create protected areas, share benefits from marine genetic resources, and strengthen scientific cooperation, laying the foundation to protect at least 30% of land and sea by 2030.

🌍 Why the ocean matters
Covering 71% of Earth’s surface, the ocean is the backbone of life on Earth. It produces around 50% of the oxygen we breathe, absorbs 25% of global CO₂ emissions, and captures over 90% of excess heat from global warming, acting as the planet’s natural climate regulator.

💼 An economic powerhouse
The ocean is also a driver of prosperity: enabling 80% of global trade and generating trillions in economic value. Every $1 invested in ocean protection delivers at least $5 in global benefits by 2050. Protecting the ocean is not a cost, it’s a smart investment.
