Amersham Events This Autumn!

We have some fantastic events planned this autumn, with something for everyone.

Fancy trying your hand at sketching? Join our expert tutor, Adrian, for a relaxed session by the River Misbourne. You'll learn to slow down, observe the landscape and wildlife around you, and capture the beauty of this special chalk stream.

Interested in birds? Come along on our guided bird walk with our in-house expert, Martha. We'll head to the wetlands area to see what species we can spot and discover how birdlife changes with the seasons. Following a successful walk earlier this summer, it'll be fascinating to see which autumn visitors have arrived.

✅ All our events are free to attend, but places are limited and often book up quickly.

Kingfishers are one of the most spectacular sights on our chalk streams. Often seen darting low over the river before disappearing in an instant, these colourful birds can be easy to miss if you blink!

Kingfishers rely on healthy rivers with clear water and plenty of small fish to feed on. They can often be spotted perched quietly on overhanging branches, watching the water below before diving at remarkable speed to catch their prey.

The presence of kingfishers is a wonderful indicator of a thriving river ecosystem, reminding us just how important it is to protect and restore our precious chalk streams.

📏 Some of us might see water levels dropping at our sites over the summer, if we get prolonged periods of dry weather.

🛑 If the water level is too low to get invertebrates into the net, there's no need to attempt a kick sample. However, please still log your survey on the database, showing that you weren't able to take a sample. It's still really valuable if you continue to visit your site on a monthly basis and take photos, even if you aren't always able to sample it. 💻

☀️ For our full guidance on carrying out Riverfly surveys through the summer months, please see riverflies.org/summer-survey-guidance. ☀️
