As we wrap up our Strangulation Awareness Campaign this May, we want to take a moment to reflect on why this work matters, and why it can’t stop here.

Across Oxford County, service providers are seeing a concerning rise in strangulation, particularly among youth. This campaign was created in response to that trend - to bring awareness, start conversations, and ensure people understand just how serious and life-threatening strangulation can be.

Over the past month, we’ve worked to shed light on:
• The risks and long-term impacts of strangulation
• How it’s being normalized in media and online spaces
• The dangers of online challenges targeting youth
• Real-life scenarios and warning signs
• Legal consequences and how seriously the justice system treats these cases
• Tools and resources for both the public and frontline professionals

Whether it was reaching youth through social media, engaging the community in important conversations, or supporting and training frontline staff, this month has been about building knowledge, awareness, and prevention.

But this is just the beginning.

We encourage you to keep learning, keep talking about it, and keep looking out for one another.

Strangulation is a serious criminal offence in Canada.

Across the country, courts are increasingly recognizing strangulation as a high-risk form of violence. Even when there are no visible injuries, the legal consequences can be severe, including criminal charges, jail time, and long-term impacts on custody and family court decisions.

Why? Because strangulation is one of the strongest indicators of future lethal violence.

Understanding the legal reality helps us take this form of harm seriously, support survivors more effectively, and challenge the normalization we sometimes see in media and online spaces.

Some online ā€œchallengesā€ aren’t as harmless as they seem.

You may have heard names like Space Monkey, Blackout Challenge, or Roller Coaster—trends that are circulating among youth online. While they’re often framed as games or dares, they involve restricting breathing or blood flow to the brain.

What’s important to know is that even brief moments of strangulation can have real impacts on the body.

Many young people don’t have all the information about what these challenges actually do—or may feel pressure to try them.

That’s why awareness matters:
• Learn the names and what they involve
• Talk openly with youth about what they’re seeing online
• Create space for questions without judgment

This isn’t about fear—it’s about making sure people have the information they need to stay safe.

Staying informed helps keep our communities safer.

Strangulation isn’t just something we hear about in the news — it’s being woven into the media we consume every day.

From music lyrics to TV storylines, harmful behaviours are often minimized, romanticized, or normalized. When this happens, it can make it harder to recognize danger in real life — and easier to dismiss the seriousness of it.

This matters. Because strangulation is one of the most lethal forms of violence, and even one instance can have lasting, life-threatening impacts.

In this post, we’re breaking down how it shows up in media, why that’s harmful, and what to watch for.

Awareness is power. The more we question what we see and hear, the better we can protect ourselves and support others.

If you or someone you know has experienced strangulation, seek medical care and support. You deserve to be safe.
