This week we visited Windsor-Essex Fun Time Day Program and spent some time out in nature. With the fall colours emerging and the temperature shifting, we are soaking up every last bit of sunshine before the weather turns chilly.

On the weekend, I was fortunate to be able to attend a workshop with Fanelli's Friends that was hosted by Family Respite Services/familyrespite. Events like these help build our skills as workers and are so needed. A big thank-you to them for providing something like this!

Our spooky adventure continues! Can we get all 76 ghosts?!? We sure are going to try!

This week we visited wagnerorchards for some apple picking, spent some time with Ursa Major learning services and center at the mall and played some board games with Fanelli's Friends.

To finish off the week, we rocked out to The Black Keys and made sure to sneak in our physio (and some reading).

Have you ever stopped to consider how everyday expectations can create barriers for disabled and neurodivergent people?

Ableism can show up in assumptions, expectations, language, and behaviours that suggest there is one right way to work, learn, communicate, or participate.

Some examples of ableism you may not realize include:

🎈 Judging someone for taking medication or assuming they should manage without it.

🎈 Shaming people for being unable to work or treating employment as a measure of someone's value.

🎈 Calling accommodations “special treatment” instead of recognizing them as supports for equitable access.

🎈 Correcting someone's spelling or grammar without being asked, particularly when communication differences may be related to disability or neurodivergence.

🎈 Calling someone lazy for needing more rest or assuming they should push through exhaustion.

🎈 Assuming chronic pain cannot fluctuate because someone was able to do something one day that they cannot do another.

🎈 Expecting people to push through pain instead of respecting their physical limitations and support needs.

🎈 Giving awards for 100% attendance, reinforcing the idea that everyone should be able to attend consistently.

🎈 Teasing someone for forgetting something when memory difficulties may be related to disability, neurodivergence, stress, or other factors.

Creating more accessible environments means questioning assumptions, respecting individual needs, and recognizing that disability and access needs can vary.

I spoke about the sunshine more times than I can count this week. Being able to get out in nature and soak up some rays, has an amazing “charging” effect on the body.

We started our week by spending some time downtown. We checked out the graffiti murals and had a photo shoot, then went to a new coffee spot.

We were able to sneak out in nature every day from our walks to Victory Park, driving by the River Canard and to exploring a new area, the Collavino Conservation Area.

Welcome to a series on the best coffee shops in our area! We often meet up with other groups to play games and spend quality time getting to know one another. Figured we might as well turn it in to a mini series.

In September, we visited Tabula Rasa. This shop is a fairly new one in Ford City. They have a relaxed vibe with pool tables, chess and all the art you could hope for. The owner, Tyler, is incredible and it’s worth the visit just to see him.

By popular demand, blacksagebakery was this months visit. This shop just had its grand opening and if you like spooky, this is the place to be. Wall to wall of gothic-style art, a back room for selfies, colouring books, ghost books and so many delicious treats. Not to mention a fully equipped washroom with a lift and free menstrual products! The owner is lovely, the snacks are tasty and there’s a reason we got tagged so much when they opened 😆

Although it wasn’t a feature of the month, Cafe March 21/cafemarch21 got a visit too. Tucked away downtown, in a cute little house is this little coffee shop with a Korean twist. They serve Korean street food, ramen and have very tasty drinks!

Spooky season is here! So to welcome it in, we celebrated Geordie’s birthday with Fanelli's Friends at blacksagebakery! Afterwards, after months of building, we finished the Eye of Sauron. I have a feeling this is going to make an appearance in future D&D Sessions...

We also enjoyed a rainy day movie and went to Big Time Entertainment Windsor; they’re definitely ready for Halloween. Our week finale was at Scarehouse with their lights on event. All the proceeds went to Windsor-LaSalle Special Olympics and it’s so cool to be able to experience the magic without also experiencing a heart attack (mostly…).
