After more than 260 blood donations to Canadian Blood Services, Wilfrid Laurier University alumni Milne Oakes (BA ’73) and Mary Lou Oakes (BA ’70) are still giving back!

Mary Lou has been able to make 107 life-saving donations and Milne made his 161st donation on Aug. 3.

The Oakes’ passion for giving back and helping others was evident during Laurier’s Waterloo campus blood drive in January. The couple eagerly connected with student donors, thanking them for attending the clinic and sharing information about how to join Canada’s stem cell registry.

At Laurier – and beyond – donor impact never stops.

When you give to students at Laurier, you’re giving them a vibrant postsecondary experience – and you’re also investing in their future. Your impact doesn’t stop at their graduation; it will increase over the course of their life and career, as it touches every community and industry that the students go on to serve and lead.

While plenty of Wilfrid Laurier University alumni have successfully started new businesses, not everyone can say they’ve launched a product into space. 🚀🌕

“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime achievement and a memory we will never forget,” says Daniel Schreiber (BA ’07), co-founder of Goldy’s, whose cereal was selected by the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) to fly around the Moon on the Artemis II mission in April 2026.
