Laura Beth Wilson (BBA ’12), member of the 2008 winning team, says the BDO Future Leaders Challenge built her confidence and changed the trajectory of her career.

She was a dancer with an arts focus and an interest in marketing. She was drawn to Lazaridis School of Business & Economics but was not feeling confident in her first year and even considered dropping out.

“I was wondering if maybe I wasn’t cut out for business; it was a major learning curve. But the BDO Future Leaders Challenge is one of the reasons I stayed. You become so invested in your team and your idea – it becomes so real to you.” It was one of the most memorable and proudest experiences of her life. To be a part of this legacy of the 20th anniversary is really amazing.”

Yes, it's 20 years since BDO partnered with the Laurier to develop a competition which challenges students to tackle current, complex business issues facing Canadian industries. Laura Beth was in the audience last month for the 2026 competition, where the winning team proposed a way to convert food waste into premium pet food. They took home home the trophy, the glory and a generous award sponsored by BDO.

Support from the KPMG Foundation will drive the next generation of accountants and industry innovation coming out of the Lazaridis School of Business & Economics at Wilfrid Laurier University.

With a gift of $250,000, they are renewing support of three KPMG Foundation Fellowships, which advance research and teaching, and for the popular KPMG Bootcamp and KPMG Day, which help prepare students for successful accounting co-ops and careers.

KPMG is a long-time donor to Laurier, giving more than a million dollars to the university since the 1990s. Learn more:
