Seeds of Diversity Canada

Seeds of Diversity Canada People Protecting the People's Seeds The diversity of seed varieties has been decreasing steadily for decades.

Food crop biodiversity is our single most crucial tool to adapt our food systems to changes –improving the odds that they can withstand threats like disease, extreme weather and pests. Our seed library and grower networks conserve many rare varieties not carried by commercial seed companies.

A few weeks ago, we challenged you to guess what this unusual decoration is hanging on the wall in Seeds of Diversity's little office . Here's the answer!

✨ Seedy School Projects of a Century Ago ✨

During the early 20th century, up until about the 1950s, it was common throughout Canada and the U.S. for schoolchildren to collect and learn about seeds in biology and agriculture classes.

Sometimes, a class would be assigned to collect seeds from weeds and wildflowers. In rural areas, a collection of agricultural seeds (wheat, rye, flax, oilseeds, etc) might be the assignment. In every case, the students were to find local plants or sources of seeds, collect them in little glass vials, label them with common and/or scientific names, and learn about the plants along the way.

Some of these projects simply displayed the glass seed vials in their original boxes, but others like the one mounted on the wall in our office, involved the creation of a display board. The project could include woodworking, creative design, mathematics, and aspects of many other skills over and above collecting and labelling the seeds.

We don't know how many of these classroom seed collections still exist, but we're sure that they were very common 80-100 years ago.

It’s hard to believe that another incredible season of Seedy Saturdays & Seedy Sundays has come and gone. How many of you made it to an event (or two, or three)? We hope you all did, and most of you should have an event close by to you. These days, there are more than 180 events from coast to coast, and while that number fluctuates year-after-year, it seems to be trending upwards. This is great news for everybody!

So, what exactly were we up to during this busy Seedy event season? Here’s a look at some of the numbers, to tell the story of how we’ve kept busy:

🌱 182 events promoted on our events page and across social media
🌱 14 new events in 2026
🌱 4032 seed packets sent out to 168 events (comprised of at least 18 different varieties of seeds)
🌱 3 virtual planning sessions attended by 99 people
🌱 14 volunteers representing Seeds of Diversity at 25 events (plus 3 staff that attended 5 events)
🌱 67 Seeds of Diversity tables set up by event organizers

The Canadian Biotechnology Action Network (CBAN) would like to thank Seeds of Diversity and many Seedy Saturday/Sunday events across the country for taking action to stop new genetically engineered (genetically modified or GM) garden seeds in Canada.

As more biotechnology companies seek to bring other GM fruits, vegetables, and garden seeds to Canada, it will be crucial to continue taking action to protect seed sovereignty and to keep GM seeds out of our seed supply and seed exchange events.

Read the update from CBAN in our May e-bulletin and take action, whether you’re a Seedy event organizer or a Seeds of Diversity supporter: https://seeds.ca/d/?t=67e85ac300004958

Here's the easiest and best way to make a real difference as a seed saver. You don't need a lot of experience, a lot of space, or any special tools. Just choose a plant species that you know how to grow, find a variety that's relatively rare, and learn how to grow more of those seeds. If everyone saved just One Rare Variety in their garden, those seeds might not be rare anymore!

We have two online tools that can help you find a variety that's rare enough to need saving ⬇️

Our Member Seed Exchange - We challenge you to choose one interesting variety that's offered by only one person. seeds.ca/seedexchange

Our Ecological Seed Finder - We challenge you to choose one interesting variety that's only offered by one seed company. seeds.ca/seedfinder

Learn more about each tool & what to do with your saved seeds in our latest e-bulletin:

Here's the equipment we use to manage our Seed Library collection. Mason jars, a scale, a funnel, envelopes and lots of detailed records. These extremely rare beans are being sent to our most experienced seed savers to multiply and rescue them. We can't find any other sources so we're so grateful to our volunteers for their dedication!

This unusual decoration is hanging on the wall in Seeds of Diversity's little office. We know what it is, but do you?

There are thousands of these in existence: collections of little glass bottles of seeds, corked, and mounted in cases or decorative panels.

What is it? Who made it? What is it for?

We'll tell you in next month's e-bulletin! Meanwhile, let us know if you've seen one, if you have one, and especially if you've made one!

You know that Seeds of Diversity saves, collects, and distributes thousands of rare seeds every year, but what really happens behind the scenes? The truth is that it looks a lot like what every seed saver does at home, so you can do it too! Over the next few months we'll take you through the full life cycle of a seed - The Prince Bean - in Seeds of Diversity's collection.

How do we decide which varieties to collect, which seeds to grow out, and when?

Today is International Seeds Day, a day meant for raising awareness about the importance of seeds in our lives and the need to preserve seed diversity. It is a day to celebrate the wonder of seeds, which are the foundation of our food systems and the basis of all life on Earth.

We are a group of seed savers from coast to coast who protect Canada's seed biodiversity by growing it ourselves and sharing it with others. Every year, we multiply the most vulnerable seed varieties that we can, exchange seeds with each other, and keep those varieties alive and in cultivation for future gardeners to enjoy.

Today, we'd like to thank all those who grow, save, and share seeds. For more than 40 years, Seeds of Diversity has served as a member-based organization of People Protecting the People's Seeds.
