🎧🪩 One last dance before the year is through!

We're wrapping up a wonderful year of music, movement, and community connection with our final Silent Disco of 2026! 🎶✨

Join Oak Bay Volunteer Services at Monterey Recreation Centre for an afternoon of music, laughter, and fun, with a colourful costume-themed twist!

We'll provide the headphones, you bring the energy! Whether you're showing off your best dance moves, getting creative with a costume, or simply enjoying the atmosphere, there's something for everyone.

We'll explore the fabrics and fibres behind local design, then get creative making badges inspired by the people, places and experiences that make us feel connected.

🗣 A few words exchanged on a walk, a chat with a neighbour, or a conversation with someone you've just met. What feels like a small moment to you might be the highlight of someone else's day.

Connection doesn't always need to be planned. Sometimes it starts with a simple hello.

So next time you have the chance, take a moment to chat. You never know the difference it might make.

There's a difference between being invited and feeling included.

It's someone pulling up another chair. Making an introduction. Remembering your name the next time you meet.

Small gestures, perhaps, but they can make all the difference to someone who's finding their place.

At Oak Bay Volunteer Services, we see how opportunities to participate can turn unfamiliar faces into familiar ones, and occasional visits into something people look forward to.

And sometimes, it all starts with an extra chair at the table.

🍂 Happy Thanksgiving from Oak Bay Volunteer Services!

As we head into the long weekend, we're feeling especially grateful for the volunteers, clients, community partners, and neighbours who make our community such a wonderful place to be.

Oak Bay Volunteer Services is teaming up with Ecologyst for Fabric of Community!

We’ll be joining Project Reconnect today at Central Baptist Church in downtown Victoria.

This free community services fair brings local organizations together in one place to offer practical support, connection, and resources, including care items, meals, ID and tax support, foot care, haircuts, and more.

We’re glad to be participating and connecting with community members and fellow service providers throughout the day.

This month in history …

In September 2017, Joan Halvorsen found herself back at Oak Bay Municipal Hall, just a few months after retiring from her role at Oak Bay Volunteer Services that July.

Joan had spent more than 37 years helping lead OBVS, making her one of the longest-serving leaders in the organization’s history. At the council meeting that September, she was recognized by the District of Oak Bay with an Oak Leaf Award, represented by a stainless-steel oak-leaf sculpture created by local artist Larry Gallant and donated by longtime community volunteer Bob Carter.

Joan’s connection to OBVS began in 1979, only a few years after the organization itself was established. Over the decades that followed, she helped guide OBVS through tremendous growth and change, from its early years through its 40th anniversary in 2017.

Her contributions also reached beyond Oak Bay. Joan was involved in the early development of the Direct Volunteer Services Committee of Greater Victoria, helping strengthen connections among organizations providing volunteer-based support throughout the region.

During Joan’s years with OBVS, the organization supported people across an extraordinary range of ages. At different points in its history, clients ranged from just six weeks old to 105, with thousands of people in between receiving the help of neighbours and volunteers.

Joan’s decades of leadership helped shape much of what Oak Bay Volunteer Services became and laid important groundwork for the organization we know today.

Looking back on this moment in OBVS history gives us an opportunity to recognize Joan’s remarkable contribution to the organization and the Oak Bay community. More than 37 years of leadership left a lasting mark on OBVS and remain an important part of our story.
