Quad Riders ATV Association of British Columbia (ATVBC) asked its members to pause riding prior to the temporary ORV Backcountry Bans took effect. This voluntary appeal was to support wildfire suppression efforts, keep recreational traffic away from active fire operations, and to minimize the risks of accidental fire starts.

This is similar to boaters being asked to stay off a lake so water bombers have the space they need to safely skim, refill, and fight the fire.

However, ATVBC does not agree with keeping the temporary ORV Backcountry Ban in effect for an extended timeframe. Once the wildfires are under control or extinguished and residents can safely return, the ban should be reassessed and lifted in areas deemed safe. Many ORV-related businesses, and the families who depend on them, will be significantly affected by a prolonged closure.

It is also important to recognize that many trails built and maintained by ORV enthusiasts are used by BC Wildfire Service crews to access remote areas and fight these fires.

ATVBC supports giving firefighters the space they need and keeping everyone safe—but restrictions should be reviewed and lifted as soon as fire conditions allow.

Hosting a BC Rivers Day event? You could be eligible for a $300 micro-grant!

Outdoor Recreation Council of BC (ORCBC) is now accepting applications for 2026 BC Rivers Day Micro-Grants, thanks to the support of FortisBC, the BC Parks Licence Plate Program, and TD Friends of the Environment.

Up to $300 is available to help cover essential event costs, including:
- Tools & supplies
- Equipment rentals
- Food
- Educational materials
- Honoraria for Indigenous Knowledge Holders
- And other event essentials

Application Deadline: August 31 at midnight

To be eligible, your BC Rivers Day event must be registered with ORCBC. Preference will be given to ORCBC members, collaborative events, and projects that support outdoor recreation and the goals of BC Rivers Day.

ATVBC 25th Anniversary Annual General Meeting Update

As Chair of the AGM Committee, I want to assure members that we continue to monitor wildfire conditions and backcountry restrictions in the South Cariboo.

At this time, ATVBC’s 25th Anniversary Annual General Meeting and Jamboree will proceed as scheduled from September 10–14.

Recent rainfall and progress on local fires are encouraging. We sincerely thank all firefighters and support crews for their tremendous efforts. The AGM Committee will review conditions and make a final decision on August 24. Safety remains our priority, and all restrictions will be respected. We are also preparing a Thanksgiving weekend contingency plan should current restrictions remain in effect.

This milestone AGM is a true homecoming to the region where ATVBC began 25 years ago. We are also celebrating 100 Mile House Council’s recent adoption of a new ORV access bylaw—another step forward for ORV access and advocacy.

We remain optimistic and look forward to welcoming members back to the South Cariboo. Please follow ATVBC for updates.

What causes wildfires in B.C.? Here’s the breakdown according to our 10-year average from 2016 - 2025:

• Lightning: ~60%
• Category 2, 3 Open Fire: ~8.1%
• Category 1 Campfire: ~6.5%
• Vehicle: ~3.9%
• Arson or suspicious: ~3.8%
• Miscellaneous: ~3.5%
• Electrical distribution or infrastructure: ~3%
• Equipment use: ~2.1%
• Railroad: ~1.1%
• Smoking substances: ~0.8%
• Undetermined: ~7.1%

When conditions are hot, dry and windy, a small ignition can quickly become a wildfire. Most human-caused wildfires are preventable. Please do your part.

NEW ORV BYLAW ADOPTED

At the August 11, 2026 Council meeting, Council adopted the District of 100 Mile House Off-Road Vehicle Bylaw No. 1482, 2026.

The bylaw establishes designated routes for off-road vehicle (ORV) use within the District and outlines requirements for safe and responsible operation.

ORV operators must:

 Have a valid RCMP Access Permit
 Carry required registration and insurance documentation, including $2 million in third-party liability insurance
 Have a valid driver’s licence
 Follow posted speed limits and all applicable provincial requirements
 Wear required safety equipment

📍 Important: ORVs are not permitted in municipal parks and may only be operated on the designated routes identified on the approved map.

The ORV Bylaw No. 1482, 2026 and designated trail/route is available on the District of 100 Mile House website or at the District Office.

🚨 IMPORTANT WILDFIRE UPDATE FOR ALL ATV RIDERS 🚨

Due to the current wildfire situation across British Columbia, the Province has implemented a temporary prohibition on recreational off-road vehicle use on Crown land in many areas of B.C.

What this means:

❌ Recreational ATV, side-by-side, and dirt bike riding is not permitted on Crown land in affected regions.

❌ Please do not travel on forest service roads or backroads for recreational riding where these restrictions are in place.

✅ This prohibition does not apply to private land or national parks, but riders should always check local restrictions before heading out.

These measures are in place to:

🔥 Reduce the risk of human-caused wildfires.
🚒 Protect the safety of the public and emergency responders.
🚨 Keep backcountry areas clear while wildfire crews continue their work.

As riders, we all have a role to play in protecting our trails, forests, and communities. Please respect all closures and avoid unnecessary backcountry travel until conditions improve.

Before planning any ride:
✔️ Check the latest BC Wildfire Service restrictions.
✔️ Review recreation and trail closures.
✔️ If in doubt, stay home and ride another day.
