Dylan's Roar is fundraising with Mabel’s Labels!

If you’re not familiar with Mabel's Labels | Personalized Kids Labels, they are personalized, durable, waterproof labels. They are great for everything from shoes, clothing tags, water bottles and backpacks. You can customize them with your name and a design, and they are dishwasher, laundry and microwave safe.

Mabel’s Labels also offers clothing stamps, silicone bands for water bottles and medical alert labels. This is a great way to ensure your items don’t end up in the lost & found or mixed up. To reduce the spread of germs, we highly recommend labelling but they are also useful for everyday life.

AAC on a tablet: where do you even start?

If your child has limited speech, is nonspeaking, or has difficulty communicating their wants, needs, thoughts and feelings, you may have heard the term AAC — Augmentative and Alternative Communication.

AAC can include everything from picture cards and communication boards to speech-generating apps on a tablet. For many families, a tablet can be an accessible way to explore AAC. There are MANY apps available, and the cost can vary a LOT.

We put together 5 popular AAC programs for tablets — from higher-cost options to free:

• Proloquo2Go
• TD Snap
• Weave Chat — FREE

In our opening video, you'll see an example of the App, Proloquo2Go, being used on the iPad to communicate. For Dylan, his iPad isn't just a piece of technology. It was his voice.

If you're considering AAC for your child, talk with your child's SLP or AAC specialist about what system might be the best fit. Sometimes the most expensive option isn't the right option — the right AAC system is the one that the person can access, learn and use meaningfully. And here's the important part: AAC isn't about taking speech away. It's about giving someone another way to communicate.

Communication is a right. Everyone deserves a way to be heard.
