Bridging gaps where it matters most 🩺🌍

Last Wednesday (Sept 23rd), Bridge to Health Co-Founder and Board Chair Dr. William Cherniak presented to the surgery residents at McMaster University.

Beyond discussing the role of R&D and AI in modern medicine, Dr. Cherniak highlighted Bridge to Health’s work: tackling critical global healthcare disparities, such as maternal health in Kabale, Uganda. 

Bridge to Health’s goal is to directly combat these gaps by scaling sustainable healthcare outreaches, training local providers, and leveraging innovative technologies like POCUS to improve maternal care and surgical outcomes worldwide.

💙 What Uganda Taught Us About the Power of POCUS

We’re honoured to share this beautiful reflection from Dr. Vanessa Guillen, MD, following her experience in Uganda 2026 as part of the Eisenhower Medical Center Ultrasound Fellowship’s Global Medicine curriculum, in partnership with Bridge to Health Medical and Dental.

From performing obstetric and cardiac ultrasounds to teaching Ugandan medical students, the outreach showed how Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) can support care where access to diagnostic imaging is limited.

But the impact doesn’t end when an outreach team leaves.

Dr. Guillen shares how Ugandan medical students continued using their POCUS skills in their own communities, a powerful reminder that education and knowledge-sharing can create lasting impact. 🌍💙

We’re grateful to Dr. Guillen and the Eisenhower team for sharing their experience and for being part of our Uganda 2026 outreach.

And just like that, we’ve wrapped up our 2026 outreach in Kisumu County, Kenya

What an incredible journey it has been.
A special thank you to our partners, the Kisumu County Government, SNAR Foundation, and Africa Cancer Foundation and our volunteers for making this mission possible through true collaboration and shared purpose.

Over the past six days, we worked alongside dedicated local healthcare professionals to deliver essential medical and dental care to communities in need. But beyond the numbers, what stands out most is the investment in people.

We are especially proud of the medical students who participated in hands-on, one-on-one training, gaining real-world experience and being formally assessed at the end of the program. Their growth and commitment give us confidence that the impact of this outreach will continue long after we’ve left.

At Bridge to Health, we believe that sustainable change comes from building local capacity; ensuring that communities are empowered, equipped, and supported to deliver care independently.
This is how we bridge gaps. This is how we build lasting impact.

Over the last 3 days, we brought healthcare directly to the heart of the community at Ogal Beach.

By setting up a field hospital, we were able to meet people where they are; removing barriers for those who often face challenges accessing care. This is what true community-centered healthcare looks like.
From medical consultations to dental services, our team delivered comprehensive care right where it was needed most.

Day 3 of our outreach in Kisumu County started with training and knowledge sharing. The morning began with a presentation on how to properly use manual blood pressure cuffs and conduct basic ear examinations.

A major component of our outreach is training and capacity building. At each outreach, medical students join us and gain exposure to practical, hands-on learning that helps strengthen and expand their academic training. They also have the opportunity to work alongside experienced healthcare professionals as they assess and treat patients.

We are serious about building local capacity and ensuring that healthcare providers are equipped to continue delivering quality care long after we leave.

This is what true partnership and sustainable healthcare impact looks like.
