In 2026, VWAT organized two major health seminars featuring respected and well‑known guest speakers in the field, along with two outdoor walking events for cherry blossom viewing at High Park and Centennial Park.

These activities aimed to promote community well‑being, encourage active living, and provide valuable health knowledge to participants.

Also, on Wednesday, May 13, the Tai Chi class came together to host a warm and joyful birthday celebration for Thầy Hưng and cô Ngọc.

The atmosphere was lively with many “homegrown” performances prepared by the students themselves—from spontaneous acts to heartfelt birthday wishes. Everyone sang karaoke, danced, and enjoyed delicious homemade dishes shared among the group.

The gathering was not only a birthday celebration but also a meaningful moment of connection, reflecting the deep appreciation and affection the class has for Thầy Hưng and cô Ngọc

Now Hiring, Summer 2026

Join our camp team this summer and make a difference in your community

Every summer, our day camp brings children and youth together for weeks of learning, creativity, and connection. It's one of the programs we're most proud of — and it wouldn't be possible without a strong, caring team behind it.

This year, we're hiring for two paid positions through Canada Summer Jobs. Whether you're drawn to the planning and coordination side of things or you love being front-and-centre with kids, there's a place for you on our team.

These aren't just summer jobs. They're an opportunity to build real skills, contribute to your community, and leave the summer knowing you made a genuine difference in a child's day.

Position 1: Camp Coordinator
https://www.vwat.org/job/camp-coordinator/

Pay: $18.60/hour · 35 hours/week

Duration: 8 weeks

Dates: June 15 – August 7, 2026

Location: 1756 St. Clair Ave W, Toronto, ON M6N 1J3

Are you the person in your friend group who always has a plan? The Camp Coordinator is our behind-the-scenes engine — designing schedules, coordinating materials, communicating with families, and making sure every day of camp runs smoothly.

What you'll be doing:

• Designing weekly schedules, program outlines, and activity plans

• Preparing materials for arts, science, and cultural programming

• Managing online registration and communicating with families

• Creating promotional materials using Canva and Google Workspace

• Supporting staff and counselors during daily camp activities

• Coordinating field trips, supplies, and room setups

• Maintaining documentation for CSJ reporting

• Wrapping up with inventory, feedback, and end-of-camp reports

What we're looking for:

• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail

• Clear written and verbal communication

• Comfortable using digital tools (Google Workspace, Canva)

• Creative, resourceful, and able to manage multiple tasks

• Cultural sensitivity and commitment to inclusive programming

• Interest in program design and youth engagement

Position 2: Camp Lead
https://www.vwat.org/job/camp-leader/

Pay: $17.60/hour · 40 hours/week

Duration: 7 weeks

Dates: June 22 – August 7, 2026

Location: 1756 St. Clair Ave W, Toronto, ON M6N 1J3

Do you light up around kids? The Camp Lead is our frontline energy — leading activities, building relationships with campers, keeping things running on time, and modelling what positive leadership looks like every single day.

What you'll be doing:

• Leading and supporting daily camp activities with children

• Supervising campers and managing group dynamics

• Practising conflict resolution, behaviour support, and safety monitoring

• Building positive relationships with campers every day

• Supporting high school volunteer counselors

• Assisting with attendance, documentation, and daily checklists

• Contributing to team reflections and wrap-up tasks

What we're looking for:

• High energy, enthusiastic, and team-oriented

• Strong interpersonal and communication skills

• Excellent time management skills and punctuality

• Patient, emotionally regulated, and adaptable

• Experience navigating group dynamics

• Able to engage shy or highly active children

• Cultural sensitivity and openness to learning

• Responsible, reliable, and safety-minded

Requirements (both positions)

• Currently enrolled in a university or college program, OR able to demonstrate strong, provable experience in the skills required for this position

• Must meet Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) eligibility requirements

• Subject to vulnerable sector police screening

• Must attend orientation and all required training sessions

• Reliable and able to commit to the full contract term

Not sure which role is right for you? If you love systems, planning, and digital tools — go for Coordinator. If you love people, energy, and being in the room with kids — go for Camp Lead. Either way, you'll be part of something meaningful.

Honouring Strength and Legacy: Trung Sisters Commemoration 2026
On March 21, 2026, VWAT Family Services proudly hosted our annual Trung Sisters Commemoration at Earl Bales Community Centre, welcoming over 250 community members for a meaningful day of remembrance, celebration, and connection.

The day began with a shared sense of purpose, as staff, board members, and dedicated volunteers arrived early to prepare the space. From arranging the hall to organizing materials and coordinating the many moving pieces behind the scenes, their collective effort created a warm and welcoming environment for all who attended.

A powerful highlight of the event was the presence of a group of students who took on the roles of Hai Bà Trưng, along with their commanders and soldiers. Through their participation, they brought history to life — embodying the courage, resilience, and leadership of the Trưng Sisters. It was a moving reminder of how these stories continue to live on through younger generations.

We were honoured to welcome distinguished guests, including MPP Michael Kerzner, Solicitor General of Ontario, MPP Josh Rakocevic, and City Councillor Anthony Perruzza. Their presence underscored the importance of recognizing and celebrating the cultural heritage and contributions of the Vietnamese community.

A particularly meaningful moment of the day was the presentation of Volunteer Appreciation Certificates by MPP Michael Kerzner to three of VWAT’s founding members, who have dedicated over four decades of service to the organization. Since its founding in 1982, these individuals have remained committed volunteer Board members, helping to shape and sustain VWAT’s impact in the community.

We were deeply honoured to recognize:

Vũ Hữu Doanh (96 years old)

Phương Đàn Nguyễn (94 years old)

Kim Bảo Nguyễn (80 years old)

Their lifelong dedication is a testament to resilience, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to community. Their contributions have laid the foundation for generations to come, and their presence continues to inspire all of us.

The program featured vibrant performances, showcasing the talent, creativity, and cultural pride of our community. From dance to music and cultural presentations, each performance added to the energy and spirit of the day.

A special recognition ceremony also honoured both seniors and youth volunteers who have made meaningful contributions to our community.

We were proud to recognize the following senior honourees:

Huỳnh Kim Phi

Huỳnh Ngọc Quyen

Huỳnh Thị Hát

Nguyễn Thị Kim Hoàng

Huỳnh Thi Hương Loan

Trần Thị Ngân Hoa

Bùi Thị Hồng Ngọc

Nguyễn Thị Hoa

Their strength, lived experiences, and continued engagement are a powerful reminder of the resilience within our community.

We also celebrated our youth honourees:

Eva Nguyen

Khang Tran

Ann Phi

These young leaders represent the future of our community, demonstrating initiative, compassion, and a strong commitment to giving back.

In addition, we recognized our microgrant recipients — Alvin Khuu, Kate Tran, Christie Nguyen, Dafne Arslan, and Tinny Nguyen — whose projects continue to empower youth, foster creativity, and strengthen community connections. Their work reflects the spirit of leadership and community-building that lies at the heart of VWAT’s mission.

Behind the scenes, the kitchen was a constant hub of activity. Volunteers worked tirelessly to prepare and package food boxes for all attendees, ensuring that every guest felt cared for and included. This quiet, dedicated work reflects the generosity and collective spirit that defines our community.

For many attendees, the event was not only a celebration, but also a meaningful return. One community member, chú Miên, shared that it had been a long time since he last attended the commemoration, and expressed how impressed he was by the dedication and care shown by the organizers. His words were a powerful reminder of the impact these gatherings have in reconnecting individuals to their community and cultural roots.

The Trung Sisters Commemoration is more than an annual event — it is a space where history, culture, and community come together. As we honour the legacy of the Trưng Sisters, we are reminded of the strength, resilience, and courage that continue to live within our community today.
