Building Canada’s food and beverage workforce means creating opportunities for people whose skills too often go overlooked.

On September 23, CCRW’s Director of Programs, Sheri Little accepted Workforce & Skills Development Recognition on behalf of CCRW at the Food Processing Skills Canada Parliamentary Reception in Ottawa.

We’re honoured to be recognized for our commitment and partnership in advancing workforce and skills development in the sector.

October is (NDEAM).

This month is about more than raising awareness. It’s a chance to ask a better question: what gets in the way of people doing their best work, and what can we change?

Throughout October, CCRW will be hosting events, joining NDEAM initiatives like Light It Up! For NDEAM, and sharing practical ways employers, communities and individuals can help make work more accessible and inclusive.

Inclusion isn’t something we celebrate for one month. It’s something we build into how we hire, lead, listen and work together all year long.

Follow along with us this October. ❤️💜

CCRW had the honour of welcoming Michael Lye, Secretary of the Australian Government’s Department of Social Services, to our Ottawa office.

Michael and CCRW CEO Maureen Haan, led a wide-ranging discussion about the future of disability employment. They explored how funding and service models shape employment outcomes, the role of specialized providers, and why support for employers and job seekers needs to continue beyond a placement.

Maureen shared insight into CCRW’s international presence and the opportunities emerging industries may offer to build more inclusive talent pipelines as workforce needs change.

Our Ottawa team brought a frontline perspective, describing how they prepare job seekers for employment, navigate accommodations, build employer relationships and provide ongoing support. Brendan Corr shared how CCRW’s national work through Untapped Talent helps employers build disability confidence and take practical steps toward more inclusive recruitment and workplaces.

Together, these perspectives opened a broader conversation about how employment services are funded, how providers work together, and what meaningful long-term success looks like for people with disabilities and the employers who hire them.

Thank you, Michael, for your openness, warmth and interest in our work. We appreciated the opportunity to exchange ideas and learn from one another.

Today is International Day of Sign Languages.🫶

In the workplace, access to sign language interpretation supports participation in interviews, meetings, training, and everyday conversations.

One detail employers can overlook: watching an interpreter and following a demonstration both require visual attention. When presenting a slide, showing a document, or demonstrating a task, pause to give participants time to look before continuing your explanation.

Ask employees what communication supports work for them, share meeting materials in advance, and allow time for interpretation and responses. These are practical ways to make workplace conversations easier to follow and contribute to.

Throughout International Week of D/deaf People, we’re sharing information to support more accessible workplaces. CCRW’s research with D/deaf and hard-of-hearing jobseekers, workers, ASL interpreters, and employers in B.C. explores workplace barriers and practices that support inclusion.

International Week of D/deaf People takes place September 21–27. This year’s theme, “Declaring Deaf People’s Human Rights,” focuses on moving from recognition to concrete implementation, including access through national sign languages.

In employment, these rights include equitable access to recruitment, workplace communication, training, safety information, and opportunities for advancement.

Accessibility also means recognizing that D/deaf and Hard of Hearing employees have different communication preferences and accommodation needs.

Throughout the week, CCRW will share information and resources to help employers identify and remove workplace barriers.
