Wilderness Committee - Ontario Office

Wilderness Committee - Ontario Office Welcome to the Wilderness Committee's Ontario page. Through education, mobilization and research, we protect Canadian wilderness & wildlife.

Welcome to the Wilderness Committee's Ontario Field Office! Our passionate door-to door canvassers in Ottawa and Toronto are on the ground talking to folks about the campaigns that matter most to Ontarians. The Wilderness Committee is Canada's people-powered, citizen-funded wilderness protection group. Our supporters in Ontario are vital to our national campaigns, as well as our on-the-ground work

in BC and Manitoba. We’ve helped gain protection for over 50 major wilderness areas in Canada, including millions of hectares of critical wildlife habitats, and some of the world’s last large tracts of old-growth temperate rainforest and boreal forest. Through public education, grassroots mobilization, and strategic research, we are working on protecting the wild spaces and species in the province to ensure a healthy future for all Canadians. We encourage you to join us in our work. To sign up for email action alerts and campaign updates from the Ontario office, please click "Sign Up" on our page!

Plover watch update: They're here!
Take some time to meet Phyllis, long time plover-lover who's been monitoring these birds for nearly a decade. She's here to tell us all about what protection used to look like for the plovers, back when their habitat was a protected part of a provincial park. Can Wasaga Beach provide the same level of care?

Grab your signs and attend one of the Fight Ford Protests across the province this Saturday May 30! And if you need another reason to stand up against this governments attacks on environment, public service, health and education: the province-run Toronto District School Board is proposing to close almost all outdoor education centres including the Island Nature School. Shame! Council of Outdoor Educators of Ontario (COEO) Fight Ford Province-Wide Protests

Happy World Turtle Day! 🐢
We're sharing video from our recent Serpent River Water Walk with local turtle defenders! Fighting for critical Blanding's turtle habitat and the health of their watershed, these folks are facing off against a gravel quarry.

Mining company Darien Aggregates/Rankin Construction wants to build a massive rock quarry on a site that been identified as 100 per cent critical habitat for a dense population of threatened Blanding’s turtles.

But you can help! Join this site fight by sending a message to decision-makers at: WildernessCommittee.org/TurtleSiteFight

Doug Ford is bypassing public hearings on his self-serving changes to the province's Freedom of Information Laws in order to restrict public access to government information--but you can still tell your MPP what you think! Lets flood their inboxes!

Founded in 1980 as a registered non-profit society and federal charity, 50,000 supporters, volunteers and activists from coast to coast to coast work together to protect nature, defend wildlife and fight for a stable and healthy climate.

Canada deserves better than billions in public money going to LNG megaprojects that benefit foreign corporations.
Fossil fuel projects like LNG expansion won’t lower costs for Canadians—they drive them up, delay real climate solutions, and undermine Indigenous rights.

That’s why we’re participating in a Week of Action across 5 major cities to call for:
❌ No more subsidies for fossil fuel giants
✅ Real investments in a clean, renewable economy that actually benefits people here

In just a few short weeks adorable piping plovers will arrive at Wasaga Beach to seek out suitable nesting sites to raise their young. With all provincial protections scrapped for the plovers it falls on Wasaga Beach mayor and council to commit to a strong plan to ensure the beach continues to welcome the endangered birds.

Take Action: WildernessCommittee.org/WasagaBeach

A little while ago we asked you to write to Environment Minister Julie Dabrusin to declare an emergency order to protect piping plover habitat at Wasaga Beach but so far they have not stepped up. We want to keep up the pressure on all levels of government responsible to get the birds the protection they require.

In response to concerns raised from plover experts and Ontarians, the mayor of Wasaga Beach has publicly vowed to keep habitat protections as is — for this year. But plovers need more than promises — they need enforceable laws backed by scientific expertise. Let’s make sure the Town knows we are paying attention!

ICYMI: on March 30 the Ontario Government brang into force the "Species Conservation Act", which guts protections for species-at-risk including de-listing over 100 species--including migratory birds such as piping plover & red-headed woodpecker, fish such as red-sided dace and Special Concern species such as cougars. Read our join press release here:

The new and much weaker Species Conservation Act does not apply at all to at-risk fish and birds. These changes create a dangerous gap in protection.

Happy holidays, we'll see you in the new year to protect more nature!
Our offices will be closed until January 5th, but you can still make a year-end gift to ensure we can sustain the fight for nature into the new year and beyond.
