"On a recent trail trip to an old-growth forest in Temagami, I was contemplating how to convey the intricacies of this rare ecosystem to volunteers experiencing it for the first time. I came prepared with information on the ecology of mature forests to engage the group.

I needn’t have worried. It didn’t take long, or much prompting, before we were all revelling in old-growth-iness: lounging in the moss, examining dead wood and throwing arms around big trunks. The experience confirmed the joking-but-true assertion a seasoned ecologist once shared with me: there’s no one definition of an old-growth forest, but you know when you’re in one."

Ontario's old growth forests need protection now! So that's what we named our newest report.🌲

While less well-known than their western counterparts, old-growth forests in Ontario are hotspots for wildlife, essential carbon storehouses, cultural touchstones for Indigenous communities and landscapes for ecological research, education, recreation and solace.

Yet they are at risk. Iconic species dependent on old and intact forests such as woodland caribou continue to decline and Canada’s forests overall have flipped from carbon sinks to carbon sources.

Along with further identification, mapping and research into old growth in the province, public awareness is key to building a groundswell of advocacy to achieve a policy shift towards protection.

We're sharing video from our recent Serpent River Water Walk with local turtle defenders! Fighting for critical Blanding's turtle habitat and the health of their watershed, these folks are facing off against a gravel quarry.

Mining company Darien Aggregates/Rankin Construction wants to build a massive rock quarry on a site that been identified as 100 per cent critical habitat for a dense population of threatened Blanding’s turtles.

🚨Send a letter to the public consultation to tell the Feds to keep their promise. The deadline is Friday April 17, 2026 so don’t wait!

When the Canadian government finally canceled long-opposed plans for an airport north of Pickering they promised to add the federal lands to Rouge National Urban Park. Now they are backtracking.
