It’s ACP’s Spring Conference in Victoria, BC! We kicked things off the night before programming with two publisher favourites: books and booze. Huge thanks to Russell Books and Munro's Books for welcoming us to browse, and to Marquis Book Printing for generously sponsoring our pub night at Bard & Banker!

Canadian publishers are raising serious concerns about YourAlberta (Government of Alberta)’s proposed Bill 28, which would restrict access to certain materials in public libraries.

While framed as a measure to protect young people, the legislation risks undermining the core principles that libraries are built on: open access to information, intellectual freedom, and trust in trained professionals. It also introduces vague criteria, increases administrative burden, and opens the door to government overreach in library operations.

Public libraries already rely on the expertise of librarians to make thoughtful, context-sensitive decisions about collections and age-appropriate access. Imposing broad, top-down restrictions—without meaningful consultation—puts that system at risk and may disproportionately impact important Canadian works, including those focusing on 2SLGBTQIA+ experiences.

ACP, Canadian Publishers' Council, and Literary Press Group of Canada are calling on the Government of Alberta to withdraw the legislation and engage in meaningful consultation with the communities and professionals most affected.

The Association of Canadian Publishers (ACP), the Canadian Publishers’ Council (CPC), and the Literary Press Group of Canada (LPG) strongly condemn the Government of Alberta’s introduction of legislation that would restrict access to certain books in public libraries. Framed as a measure to limi...

Organizations representing Canada’s publishing, writing, and bookselling sectors stand in solidarity with artists, cultural workers, and arts organizations across Nova Scotia as communities prepare to gather at rallies throughout the province calling for the reversal of sweeping cuts to arts and culture funding. This includes the total elimination of the Publishers Assistance program, making Nova Scotia the only province in Canada that does not invest in its own book publishers.

The Nova Scotia budget has not yet passed, and there remains an opportunity for the province to reconsider cuts that will have lasting consequences for creators, communities, and cultural life in the province.

Association of Canadian Publishers and the Literary Press Group of Canada are deeply disappointed by the Government of Nova Scotia’s decision to eliminate provincial funding for independent publishers through the cancellation of the Publishers Assistance program. With this devastating cut, support for local publishers has been reduced from $700,000 annually to zero, making Nova Scotia the only province in Canada that does not invest in its own book publishers.

We urge the Nova Scotia Government to reverse the elimination of support to book publishers and restore the Publishing Assistance Fund of $700,000 to recognize, along with every other province, that sustained investment in local publishing is an investment in economic resilience and cultural vitality.

The Association of Canadian Publishers, the Canadian Publishers' Council, and the Literary Press Group of Canada condemn YourAlberta (Government of Alberta)'s decision to proceed with its discriminatory book ban. The ban restricts access to literature, undermines professional expertise, and diverts public resources away from actual learning.

The Association of Canadian Publishers (ACP), the Canadian Publishers’ Council (CPC), and the Literary Press Group of Canada (LPG) strongly condemn the Government of Alberta’s decision to proceed with its discriminatory book ban, now formally in effect in schools across the province. The impleme...

Canadian publishers are standing with NNELS, Centre for Equitable Library Access - CELA, and the library community in opposing proposed changes in Bill C-15 that would repeal key provisions of the Canada Post Corporation Act. These provisions—including the Library Book Rate and free mailing of materials for people who are blind—are essential to equitable access to books across Canada and must remain protected in legislation.
