DEAR CFANJ INTERNATIONAL VOLUNTEERS ❤️
As we prepare for our upcoming outreach to our brothers and sisters at the leprosy centre, I want to thank every volunteer who has made themselves available to serve with love, compassion and dignity.
Please do not be afraid. Leprosy (Hansen’s disease) is not spread through casual contact such as sitting near someone, talking to them, sharing the same space, or simply visiting for a day. Transmission is generally associated with prolonged, close contact with an untreated person. People who are receiving appropriate treatment become much less likely to transmit the disease.
However, while we are going to serve with love, we must also act responsibly and follow the health and safety instructions provided by the centre and health professionals.
PLEASE DO:
• Follow all instructions given by the medical/centre staff.
• Wash or sanitize your hands regularly, especially before eating and after the visit.
• Wear any protective equipment recommended by the centre.
• Keep any cuts, wounds or broken skin properly covered.
• Maintain good personal hygiene before and after the outreach.
• If you have any health concern, open wound, or illness, please inform the outreach coordinator before attending.
• Treat everyone with dignity, kindness and respect. Remember that these are our brothers and sisters, and their condition should never make them feel rejected or less valued.
PLEASE DO NOT:
• Do not panic or stigmatize anyone because they have leprosy.
• Do not touch open wounds or bodily fluids unnecessarily.
• Do not share personal items such as towels or other items that may come into contact with bodily fluids.
• Do not ignore any safety instructions from the healthcare professionals at the centre.
• Do not attend if you are unwell without first speaking with the outreach coordinator.
Most importantly, let us remember why we are going: to show compassion, restore dignity, encourage those who may feel forgotten, and demonstrate the love of Christ through practical service.
We will serve wisely, safely and wholeheartedly.
