Have you ever accessed court records as part of your family history research? These can be a treasure trove of information that may include some of your ancestors! There are always black sheep in the family...or at least we hope so!

Did you know from the efforts of our ever diligent board member, David Pike, that we have a significant number of court records (and growing) that he has scanned from The Rooms Provincial Archives of Newfoundland and Labrador? For our members this is an incredible resource to access!

For example, today's scan is from GN 5/2/A/1 Box 35 (1829-1835). This involves a court case involving John Forsyth Sr. and John Forsyth Jr. The latter is sentenced to transportation out of Newfoundland for seven (7) years, "...into such parts beyond the seas as His Majesty shall direct." His crime...larceny of a chest of drawers, a kettle, a bellows and a pair of boots from Maurice Bolan. Check out as well the list of jurors and witnesses.

There are even more examples of such punishment and even more petty juror lists in the collection.

Want to see more? For our members, visit our website (www.fhsnl.ca) and click on the Resources tab and scroll down the page to this and other fantastic collections!

Not yet a member? For only $45.00 per year you can have access to our ever growing collection of records, receive our monthly newsletter (The Ancestor) along with all back issues to 1984 and past lectures beginning in 2011! Talk about bang for your buck!
