The Sidney/North Saanich RCMP are warning residents about a new fraud scheme known as the “Phone Delivery Scam” after several local victims reported combined losses exceeding $33,000 in recent weeks.

Fraudsters pose as telecommunications providers and offer a free phone upgrade, loyalty reward, or too-good-to-be-true deal. After collecting personal information, they arrange for a new device to be delivered. Victims are then contacted and told the phone was sent in error and must be returned using a prepaid shipping label or QR code. In reality, the device is shipped directly to the scammer, while the victim remains responsible for the contract and payments.

Protect yourself:
☎️ Be wary of unsolicited calls offering phones or special deals.
☎️ Never share personal or account information with unknown callers.
☎️ Verify any offer directly with your provider using a trusted phone number.
☎️ Review shipping labels carefully and confirm any return requests with your provider.

If you think you've been targeted, contact your telecommunications provider right away, report the incident to police, and file a report with the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca.
