Bill Brooks of the Cycling Without Age Society attended our last meeting, updated us on their recent activities, and accepted another donation from the club to help support his group. He and his 40-plus bike pilots continue to service the community in fair weather and cool times too by offering rides to seniors and juniors who regard this trip as a joyous adventurous break from their usual routine. Another great organization in the Sidney area which Sidney Rotary is proud to support.

Once again the Sidney Rotarians have answered the bell. The Salvation Army bell. that is. For the first three weekends in December, members of the club attended one of the Salvation Army Kettles in downtown Sidney, soliciting funds for this fine organization. We support the Salvation Army because they do great things, providing food, shelter and clothing to many of the most unfortunate souls in our community. Although things are tight this year, Sidney citizens were their usual generous selves in stocking the kettle bowl or swiping their credit cards. Thank you, Sidneyites!

At our last meeting. we had the enjoyable privilege of listening to CHEK news reporter Mackenzie Read, who vividly described her recent adventures with the 2025 Cops For Cancer bike ride down Vancouver Island. She was one of eighteen participants in this year's ride, and she described the agonies of some very long days combined with the emotional ups and downs as the troop visited small towns and schools throughout the voyage. Not a dedicated biker at the start of the exercise, she is now the proud owner of her personal bike, and is truly thankful that she participated in the ride. Club members were most impressed with her spirit and honesty, and it made for a most memorable presentation..

On Thursday night our club held its annual White Elephant Auction to raise funds for the Rotary Foundation. What's a white elephant? It's something that one no longer finds useful, cluttering up closets, crawl spaces or garages. One wraps this no-longer-useful "gem" in a disguise, creates a little poem hinting at its nature, and adds it to the "treasure pile." Our honorary member and skilled auctioneer, Kenny Podmore, then read out the poem, and then cajoled, teased and implored club members to purchase all of these "treasures", one at a time. The winning bid was really a pledge to donate that amount of funds to the Rotary Foundation, and the prize was whatever the unwrapping of the "gift" revealed. Kenny's skills netted over $1700 in pledges, and a good laugh was had by all. Thank you , Kenny, for another entertaining evening at the Sidney Rotary Club.

On Thursday night our club hosted several of the volunteers who helped us run our "kids games" (including BINGO and crown & anchor for adults) at the Saanich Fair on Labour Day weekend. Without their help we would not be able to generate the funding which we use throughout the year to fund scholarships and support various organizations on the peninsula. We thank each and every one of them for their enthusiasm and support.

September is Literacy and Basic Education month for Rotary members. With this in mind, President Janet invited Daphne McNaughton, Executive Director of the newly minted Saanich Peninsula Childrens' Book Recycling Society, to bring our group up to date on their recent happenings. Formerly the 1000x5 group, the new society has now been registered as an official BC Non Profit organization with their own registration number, so that they can apply for grants and also issue tax receipts for donations, Daphne and her group estimate that they have now cycled approximately 224,000 "just right" books to children on the Saanich POeninsula, Wow! They are certainly doing their bit to increase Canadian literacy, and we are proud to support their efforts.

Last night we enjoyed the company of Michael Peirone of the Victoria Hand Project as he brought us up to date on their recent activities around the world. They have now produced more than 150 appliances for wounded warriors in the Ulkraine, and are now looking at a trip to Nepal to help out some of that country's crippled people.

On behalf of President Janet and Chief Coordinator Roger, all of the Rotary Club of Sidney members wish to express their appreciation and gratitude to the sixty-plus volunteers from all sectors of the community who helped us this weekend. Their help and assistance enabled our club to entertain several thousand members of the Saanich Peninsula at the Saanich Fair. As well, we made substantial bucks in the process. We hope that you enjoyed the experience as much as we did. Well done, and thanks again!

On Thursday we will be setting up our games of chance at the fairgrounds for the Saanich Fall Fair. There is something here for everyone. Fishtank and Lucky Duck for the little ones, Pinvall, Luckyball and Ring Toss for the pre-teens, Cork gun and Ball Pitch for the teens, and Number wheel and BINGO for the adults. We are now located behind the Thrifty Bandshell on the western side of the Fair, between the horse corral and the sheep barns. Come by and try your luck. The money raised stays here on the peninsula for scholarships, projects, and support to local organizations.
