Our One Day of Action for Water program brings together community-led activities from across Canada into one shared celebration of impact - and with 275+ events registered this year, there’s a lot to celebrate! πŸ™Œ

Today we are shining a spotlight on Love Your Lakes, an event registered by A Greener Future 🌟

Rather than hosting a single cleanup, A Greener Future has organized 100+ cleanups across Ontario throughout the summer. Volunteers are removing litter while also collecting valuable data that contributes to citizen science efforts - helping identify pollution trends and inform long-term solutions πŸ”¬

Love Your Lakes is just one example of the many impactful water stewardship activities featured on the One Day of Action for Water map.

πŸ“’ NEWS: The federal government has assembled a taskforce to provide independent advice on how to better measure, value, and account for nature in decision-making.

The group will also develop recommendations aimed at mobilizing private investment for nature-positive outcomes while advancing the use of natural capital accounting to better reflect the value of nature in public and private decision-making.

As an organization that has worked for more than 20 years to protect freshwater (including in the Columbia wetlands, pictured here), we have long recognized the often unaccounted for values of healthy watersheds and the services they provide. As noted in the release, Canada’s wetlands provide an estimated $225 billion annually in ecosystem services related to water quality and climate.

Effective water policy requires an understanding of the values and concerns of the communities it serves.

"Watershed Security Matters: Analysis of 10+ years of public opinion polling on fresh water in B.C.” dives into public perceptions regarding watershed health and security, providing critical context for decision-makers and stakeholders.

In this brief, the authors highlight three crosscutting takeaways and the overarching message that British Columbians have a high expectation for strong, coordinated, and well-funded action to secure the future of watersheds across B.C.
