🎉 We’re Live! 🎉

The Pictou West Food Bank website is officially up and running!

Please take a moment to visit us at:
www.pictouwestfoodbank.com

This project has been months in the making and would not have been possible without the dedication, patience, and hard work of our incredible volunteers. From gathering information and developing policies to reviewing content and providing feedback, many people contributed their time and talents to help bring this website to life.

The website is an important step forward in providing better access to information for clients, volunteers, donors, and community partners. Visitors can now learn more about our services, mission, board of directors, and ongoing journey with Food Banks Canada Standards of Excellence accreditation.

While the website is now live, this is just the beginning. Over the coming months, we will continue to add new content, resources, annual reports, financial information, volunteer opportunities, and updates on the work happening at the food bank.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this happen, and thank you to our community for your continued support.

We invite you to have a look around and let us know what you think!

💙 Together, we are building a stronger, more accessible, and more transparent Pictou West Food Bank.

The Pictou West Food Bank exists to relieve hunger in our community by providing access to nutritious food in a welcoming and respectful environment.

📊 Food Banks Canada’s 2026 Poverty Report Card gives Nova Scotia an overall grade of D.

The report highlights some difficult realities facing people across our province:

🔹 Food insecurity affects 26.2% of Nova Scotians.
🔹 Social assistance provides only 30.9% of the income needed to reach the poverty line.
🔹 Nova Scotia received an F for Food Insecurity.
🔹 Nova Scotia received an F for Social Assistance as a Percentage of the Poverty Line.
🔹 Nova Scotia received a D for Legislative Progress.

Food Banks Canada notes that while there have been some improvements in housing, school meals, and affordability measures, many supports still fall short of what people need to meet basic living costs.

At Pictou West Food Bank, these numbers are more than statistics. They represent people in our communities who are struggling to afford food, housing, transportation, and other essentials.

Food banks provide critical support, but food banks alone cannot solve food insecurity. The report calls for stronger income supports, renewed investments in employment and skills training, and a new poverty reduction strategy with clear and measurable goals.

Behind every statistic is a neighbour.

We encourage everyone to take a few minutes to read the Nova Scotia Poverty Report Card and learn more about the challenges facing our province.

🪥 Quick question…

How often do you change your toothbrush?

If you’re like most people, probably not as often as dentists recommend. Most experts suggest replacing your toothbrush every 3–4 months (or sooner if the bristles start looking like they’ve survived a hurricane).

For many of the families we serve, replacing a toothbrush isn’t always at the top of the shopping list. When you’re choosing between food and personal care items, food wins every time, and understandably so.

That’s why toothbrush donations are always appreciated at the food bank. They’re small, inexpensive, and make a big difference to someone’s health and dignity.

Speaking of inexpensive…

What’s your Amazon cart look like these days? 👀

We’re going to drop a link in the comments for a bulk pack of toothbrushes. Feel free to toss one into your cart while you’re shopping. Trust me, if your cart looks anything like mine, it probably won’t even notice. 😂 Or go in on a bulk order with a friend.

Side note- we always encourage people to shop local whenever possible. We are fortunate to have some wonderful local businesses that support our community. However, bulk toothbrushes can be surprisingly difficult to source locally and are often much more expensive when purchased in smaller quantities. This is one of those occasions where a bulk online order helps us stretch every donation dollar a little further.

Every toothbrush donated helps.

Thanks for helping us keep our community smiling! 😁

As we roll into June, many children are excitedly counting down the days until school lets out for summer. ☀️🎒

For families, however, the arrival of summer can bring added stress and uncertainty.

When school is out, many children lose access to valuable resources that help support their daily needs, including school breakfast and lunch programs. For families already struggling with rising food costs, those extra meals can place additional pressure on already stretched household budgets.

At the Pictou West Food Bank, we often see the need increase during the summer months as families work to fill that gap.

You can help.

Whether it's donating food, making a financial contribution, volunteering your time, or simply sharing this post, every act of kindness helps ensure local families have access to nutritious food throughout the summer.

Together, we can help make summer a season of joy for every child and peace of mind for every family. 💛

Nobody should feel embarrassed for needing a menstrual product. And yet many people with periods still face stigma or even bullying just for asking.

Silence and shame don't fix period poverty. Talking about it does. Donating does. Because when products are freely available, no one has to ask.

This Menstrual May, let's make it a little easier for someone in our community.

Donate unopened menstrual products at your nearest drop-off location or organize your own drive at your workplace!

What We Need Wednesday… with a twist! 👀

This week, we’re not asking for food donations; we’re asking for you. ❤️

Our Annual General Meeting is happening tomorrow (April 23rd, 6:30 pm at the food bank), and we’re looking for community members who care about our work to step forward and get involved.

Right now, we have a real need for:
🔹 A Secretary to help keep things organized and documented
🔹 Someone interested in training as Treasurer over the next 6–12 months

These roles are essential to keeping our food bank running strong and serving our community.

If this doesn't interest you, we have other roles that may better fit your skill sets. You don’t need to be an expert; just someone willing to learn, show up, and make a difference.

If you’ve ever wondered how you could help beyond donating, this is your moment.

🗓️ Join us at the AGM tomorrow and be part of something meaningful.

Message us for details or just come out, we’d love to see you there!
