Dreaming of your own wooden boat? Now's your chance! A group of County youth, along with the help of three mentors, have been building a 7' rowboat and it is being auctioned off to raise funds for Youth Craft Academy, a program that teaches youth craft-based skills such as woodworking, fibre arts, glass work and ceramics.
It's an amazing little boat with a very unique design feature. To learn more about the auction and the boat click here!

We witnessed some beautiful teamwork happening today at Boat Class. We made major headway today too: we attached the bottom of our boat and secured our lap joint which meant we were able to take the boat off its form and flip it right side up! What a crew. We all can’t wait to see if our boat floats πŸ˜… Ahoy Mateys!!

We are half way through our boat course and starting to see a form come to shape. This week our crew were learning how to sharpen and use hand planes and how to use the jigsaw. We’re so lucky to have woodworker extraordinaire Paul Epp mentor this project. Stay tuned for what’s happening next!!

At the start of every glass class our participants begin by unwrapping last weeks projects, seeing them for the first time after fusion occurred in the kiln. It is a personal and vulnerable time as a young maker and offers a heightened learning experience as they consider how they feel about their piece, observing what works and, perhaps, what could benefit from further experimentation. They use all of their senses to take in the object they have just created. Then they courageously share their work with their peers and open themselves to critique. YCA believes that craft education nurtures self-expression, builds confidence, strengthens social skills and encourages self-reflection. We are so proud of our participants as we support and observe their growth along the way.

We are goo-goo-bananas-excited about our field trip to OCAD University over March Break! Join us on this big adventure to Toronto and back on March 19th, departing from the County Arts Lab at 8am. Transportation, meals and snacks are included in this sliding scale event (and full bursaries available to those who could use it)! While at OCAD U we will explore, learn and create using state of the art equipment. Come discover what a craft/art/design education can look like! Link in bio.

Take a peek into our Glass Class in session now! Our teen participants are learning how to create fused glass; they do all the cutting and assembly themselves to create functional and beautiful objects of their own design. Talk about a keepsake! We love to watch Kirei Samuel of share the knowledge she has accumulated from a lifelong career in glass with the next generation.

Wow, we barely had the chance to tell you about this course before it filled up! BOATBUILDING 101 with Christopher Bolton, Katrina Tompkins and mentor Paul Epp is FULL! Join our waitlist through the registration page (link in bio)

In this 9 week course we'll be building 2 of the Ladybug Pram by New Brunswick based boat builder (and wooden boat icon) Harry Bryan. The finished boats will be raffled through ticket sales to raise funds for Youth Craft Academy, but not before we test out their seaworthiness together on the water!

We can't wait for this one!

The essence of YCA captured during our recent Textiles class. We thank our talented instructors and of for mentoring our participants - which is really what craft education is all about.
