Behind every statistic is someone who needed a safe place to turn. ❤️

In 2025, SOWINS provided more than 1,500 counselling sessions, 3,600 overnight stays at its transition house and over 480 overnight stays for at-risk youth.

But with mounting financial pressures, keeping these essential services available is becoming increasingly challenging.

On November 14, a night of dining, entertainment and community support could help make a difference for women, children and youth across the South Okanagan.

10/23/2026

Cultural abuse can be a form of gender-based violence when someone uses cultural beliefs, traditions, family expectations, or identity to control, manipulate, isolate, or harm another person.

It can look like:
▪️Using cultural or family expectations to justify controlling someone's choices, behaviour, or relationships
▪️Threatening shame, rejection, or exclusion from family or community if someone leaves a relationship
▪️Preventing someone from participating in their cultural traditions or community as a form of control
▪️Using concerns about family honour or reputation to pressure someone to remain in an unhealthy or unsafe relationship
▪️Controlling how someone expresses their cultural identity or traditions
▪️Using immigration status, community ties, or cultural expectations to isolate or intimidate someone

Everyone has the right to celebrate their culture and express their identity freely, without fear, pressure, or control.

If you or someone you know is experiencing cultural abuse, SOWINS is here. Contact our team or visit our website to learn about available supports and services.

Yesterday, SOWINS attended the Annual Service Provider Fair at Compass House, connecting with community members and fellow service providers to share information, build relationships, and explore ways to work together to bridge service gaps.

Collaboration is essential to strengthening our community’s network of support and helping ensure individuals can access the resources and services they need.

Thank you to PDSCL for bringing community partners together and creating space for these important conversations!

You're allowed to change your mind. What felt right before might not feel right now.

You can reconsider a decision, change your boundaries, or feel differently about a situation as time goes on. You don't owe anyone an explanation for how your feelings change.

And if speaking up or changing your mind doesn’t feel safe, that’s okay, too. You deserve to have your choices, feelings, and boundaries respected, without pressure or fear.

There is no right timeline for figuring out what feels right for you.

Save, share, or revisit this reminder whenever you need it. đź’ś

These messages of hope, shared by guests at last year’s Inspiring Hope Gala, are a beautiful reminder of what happens when a community comes together with compassion, generosity, and a shared commitment to change.

Every message represents a belief in brighter futures. Every act of generosity helps strengthen the support available to women and children rebuilding their lives after gender-based violence. And every person who stands with SOWINS helps create a community where survivors feel supported and new beginnings are possible.

As we celebrate 45 years of hope, we’re reminded that the impact of our work extends far beyond one evening. It lives on in the lives touched, the connections built, and our collective commitment to a future free from gender-based violence.

Tickets are still available for Inspiring Hope on Saturday, November 14, at the Penticton Trade & Convention Centre. Together, we can continue making a difference. đź’ś
