Business Risk Management (BRM) programs (including AgriInsurance, AgriStability, AgriInvest and AgriRecovery) are designed to help Canadian farmers manage risks from weather, markets, and other disruptions.

But organic and diversified farms may experience these programs differently. Organic risk profiles, prices, and diversified production systems may not always be well reflected in how programs are designed and delivered.

COG is partnering with researchers at the University of British Columbia on a new research project to better understand organic farmers’ experiences with BRM programs and how they could better support farm resilience. Led by Dr. Susanna Klassen, postdoctoral fellow, and Dr. Navin Ramankutty, Professor, the research will help inform recommendations for Canada’s Next Policy Framework (2028-2033).

This fall, we’ll be launching a national survey and inviting organic farmers across Canada to share their experiences.

From coast to coast to coast, we see women making a major impact on our Canadian food and farming systems. They overcome fierce challenges, feed their communities, and inspire us everyday! International Year of the Woman Farmer (IYWF) is the perfect opportunity for us to share some of their stories with you 👩‍🌾

Schill Family Farm, run by Lisa Schill and her husband Rob, is nestled in the gently rolling valley landscape between the small town of Balcarres and Fort Qu’appelle, Saskatchewan. This powerhouse family raises a variety of livestock including sheep, chickens and pigs and grow diverse field crops, including organic oats, flax, cover crops and multispecies livestock feed.

Their farm focuses on healthy soils and practices that contribute uniquely to the soil microbiome and regenerate soil health. To them, healthy soils equal healthy plants, equals healthy food.

Lisa and her family love to experiment and try new things on-farm and do so often - they are keen to find solutions and see what works best for their context.

Our team has had the pleasure of working closely with Lisa and Rob through our Regenerative Organic Oats (ROO) program over the past few years. We admire them for their willingness to step out of their comfort zones and embrace new ideas. We know their approach to farming also inspires those around them both in the ROO program and in their community.

Happy to Lisa and to every woman farmer helping drive progress in regenerative organic agriculture by farming with an innovative frame of mind!

A strong organic plan is the foundation of each organic farm. ☕️

The purpose of record-keeping on organic farms is to track everything that takes place or is used on the organic operation. It sounds like a huge job but most farms already keep very good records to monitor their productivity and to track income and expenses for tax purposes.

By adding documentation about the products that are used and a daily log of farm activities, they have the basics for a solid recordkeeping program.

In spring 2026, COG reached an exciting milestone by bringing its RBC In-Class and On-Farm Visit Program beyond Ottawa, Ontario for the first time 🐝

The expansion is part of COG's Youth Programming initiative, a growing national effort that builds on more than 20 years of success of the Growing Up Organic program. Through the Youth Programming initiative, COG is expanding opportunities for children and youth across Canada to learn more about healthy food, agriculture, and the environment through hands-on experiences with local farmers.

As part of this expansion, the Eco Club at Homelands Senior Public School in Mississauga, Ontario participated in the RBC In-Class and On-Farm Visit Program, connecting students with local organic farmer Karen Hutchinson of Albion Hills Community Farm in Caledon, Ontario for an immersive learning experience that brought classroom lessons to life 🌱

COG extends its sincere thanks to Karen Hutchinson and the team at Albion Hills Community Farm for sharing their knowledge, enthusiasm, and passion with students, and to the RBC Foundation for making experiences like these possible.

Are you interested in becoming a successful organic seed producer? Canadian Organic Growers is proud to offer this comprehensive, intermediate course focused on supporting a new generation of successful, commercial, organic seed producers in Canada. Access to organic, biodiverse, and locally adapted seeds is key to the success of the organic farming sector in Canada, yet organic seed availability remains limited. ⁠

Through this course we aim to cultivate the next generations of Canadian seed producers who, like us, envision a future where organic seed security and integrity is increased, organic farmers have access to resilient and adaptive seed, and alternative seed systems are flourishing. Students will develop a thorough understanding of the science and business of organic vegetable seed production. ⁠
⁠
📅 The course runs from January 11th to March 12th, 2027, with a final course assignment due on March 28th, 2027.
💻️ The course is 100% online, with live virtual learning sessions⁠
