Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives has just released their Alternative Federal Budget for 2026-27, which lays out a vision for a Canada made strong by its commitment to solidarity and dignity for all.

The Child Care chapter lays out the actions needed to:
➡️ Address the exclusion of women from Canada’s current fiscal plan.
➡️ Further advance universal child care as an essential pillar of a robust, workable economic strategy to support Canada Strong.
➡️ Highlight the irrefutable fact that affordable, accessible child care is also key to addressing the affordability crisis for young families.

Housing is unaffordable. Good jobs are hard to find. The cost of living keeps rising.

Migrants did not create these crises. Migrants are struggling through them too.

But instead of taking on the rich and powerful, politicians are blaming migrants, cutting immigration and changing the rules on people who were invited to build their lives here.

On September 19 & 20, people across the country are taking action to demand:

✊ Renew work permits
✊ End exploitation
✊ Stop deportations
✊ Permanent resident status for all

Migrants care for our families, grow our food, build our communities and keep Canada running. Migrants make Canada work. Canada must work for migrants too.

Just published: Read the new open letter from business leaders calling for early childhood education to be treated as essential infrastructure

An open letter released September 1, 2026, signed by a group of 22 Canadian business leaders, calls for early childhood education to be treated as core economic infrastructure.

Pointing to decades of Canadian research about the benefits of early childhood education, the letter “grounds its case in established science” that demonstrates how early learning and child care pays off for child development, family stability and economic productivity.

Child Care Now Executive Director Morna Ballantyne welcomed the letter and says she is hopeful that the federal government will pay attention to it.

“We have been saying for many decades that public investments in early childhood education and care have multiple benefits that spread through the economy,” she said. “The more leaders from across Canada’s economic sectors carry that same message, the harder it is for governments to disregard it.”

Child Care Now is deeply saddened by the passing of Stephanie Smith: mother, early childhood educator, former president of BC General Employees’ Union, and a passionate advocate for high quality universal child care who championed better working conditions and compensation for all who work in early childhood education. Our heartfelt sympathy and solidarity to Stephanie’s family, to BC’s child care advocates, and to her many friends and colleagues across Canada and around the globe.
