RSC Fellows are men and women from all branches of learning who have made remarkable contributions in the arts, the humanities and the sciences, as well as in Canadian public life. Each year, approximately 80 outstanding individuals are elected to the fellowship. This cohort includes approximately 75 Regularly Elected Fellows recommended by the Divisions of the RSC Academies; up to six Specially E

lected Fellows; up to four Foreign Fellows; and a maximum of one Honorary Fellow. Election to fellowship in the Society is the highest accolade available to scientists, artists and scholars in Canada. The RSC is comprised of three bilingual Academies, embracing a broad range of scholarly disciplines and artistic fields:

Academy I is the Academy of Arts and Humanities. Academy III is the Academy of Science.

📖 Nouveau rapport | Le sous-sol canadien est riche en minéraux critiques et stratégiques, comme le lithium et le cuivre, qui sont indispensables à la transition énergétique et technologique. Comme la demande pour ces ressources est actuellement en nette augmentation, il est plus important que jamais de veiller à ce que nos pratiques d’exploitation minière soient durables.

C’est dans cette optique que le EcotoQ - Centre de recherche en écotoxicologie du Québec , un pôle stratégique financé par le Fonds de recherche du Québec – Nature et technologies (FRQNT), a organisé en 2023 un atelier multidisciplinaire intitulé « Le développement minier durable pour une planète en santé ».

Cet événement a réuni 42 spécialistes des milieux de la recherche et de l’industrie ainsi que des représentants citoyens et autochtones.

📖 New Report | The Canadian subsurface is rich in critical and strategic minerals essential to the energy and technological transition, such as lithium and copper. As demand for these resources grows, ensuring that mining development is sustainable has become more important than ever.

To address this challenge, the Quebec Ecotoxicology Research Centre (EcotoQ - Centre de recherche en écotoxicologie du Québec), a strategic cluster funded by the Fonds de recherche du Québec – Nature et technologies (FRQNT), held a multidisciplinary workshop in 2023 entitled “Sustainable Mining Development for a Healthy Planet.”

The event brought together 42 experts and representatives from scientific, industrial, civic, and Indigenous communities.

Abdulla (Carleton University (Official)), Canada’s National Champion of the 2026 Frontiers Planet Prize, will explore why reducing emissions alone may not be enough to meet climate goals and the role DAC could play in addressing climate change.

Kahsennarò:roks Maddy Deom (Kanien’kehá:ka, settler) is a master’s student at the University of British Columbia's Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries, where she works closely with Nations – particularly Kahnawakehró:non (people of Kahnawà:ke) – to support their fishing rights.

Last year, under the supervision of Andrea Reid (RSC College), Kahsennarò:roks attended the Taikura Summit (hosted by Royal Society Te Apārangi) as part of the Tri-Academy Partnership on Indigenous Engagement. There, she learned about the power of “collectivizing,” calling for a future grounded in joy that makes space for Indigenous knowledge, communities, and lived experiences.

Jaris Swidrovich is a q***r, Two-Spirit, Saulteaux, and Ukrainian pharmacist, Assistant Professor and Indigenous Engagement Lead at the Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Toronto (University of Toronto) – and, as Priss Cryption, is a drag queen working to advance HIV prevention.

Jaris originally planned to become a drama teacher before a pharmacy application redirected their path. Pharmacy quickly became a passion, alongside a commitment to strengthening Indigenous representation in the profession and addressing healthcare inequities – particularly the low awareness and uptake of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) among Indigenous Peoples in Canada.

In 2025, Jaris attended the Taikura Summit in Aotearoa New Zealand (hosted by Royal Society Te Apārangi) through the Tri-Academy Partnership on Indigenous Engagement, where they had the opportunity to share this work while connecting with Indigenous scholars from Canada and the Pacific to explore shared barriers Indigenous academics face within institutional systems.

As leaders gathered in Évian, France, for the 2026 G7 Summit, science helped shape the conversation. 🌎

One of the G7 Engagement Groups, the Science 7 (S7), brings together the national science academies of the G7 countries to the best-available scientific evidence to world leaders. The Royal Society of Canada is proud to be part of this process every year.

La science a contribué à orienter les discussions des dirigeants des pays du G7, réunis à Évian, en France, à l’occasion du Sommet de 2026. 🌎

L’un des groupes de consultation du G7, le Science 7 (S7), rassemble des représentants des académies scientifiques nationales des États du G7 qui ont comme mandant de fournir aux dirigeants mondiaux les meilleures données scientifiques sur les enjeux de l’heure. La Société royale du Canada est fière de participer chaque année à ce processus.

Ces recommandations ont été présentées aux gouvernements et aux décideurs politiques en amont du sommet, afin qu’ils puissent s’appuyer sur le point de vue des scientifiques pour discuter de la gouvernance numérique, des technologies émergentes, de la résilience mondiale et du développement durable.

David Garneau (FRSC) (Métis Nation of Saskatchewan) is a painter, curator, critical art writer, and Professor of Visual Arts at the University of Regina. His work and writing engage contemporary Indigenous ways of being, with a focus on how art can express and form identity, complicate history, stimulate empathy, and inspire responsibility.

A leading critical voice on Indigenous representation and (re)conciliation, his practice considers how art can both reflect and challenge dominant narratives. Across his work, he examines the ongoing effects of colonialism, including relationships to land, cultural continuity and disruption, historical trauma, and the evolving relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples.

Last year, Garneau attended the Taikura Summit (hosted by Royal Society Te Apārangi) as part of the Tri-Academy Partnership on Indigenous Engagement. In this interview, he reflects on what it meant to represent Canada in this international context, and on the ideas, relationships, and insights he continues to carry forward from the summit.
