This spring, we partnered with the Canadian Institute of Forestry to present our e-lecture series, Growing Climate-Resilient Urban Forests: Species Selection and Assisted Migration Strategies.

Across three engaging sessions, experts from across Canada shared research and practical insights on how communities can prepare urban forests for a changing climate.

Ryan Munroe explored the potential of underutilized tree species and highlighted the Eastern Canada Tree Species Selector Tool, reinforcing the importance of planting the right tree in the right place with the right aftercare.

Dr. Christian Messier and Julie Messier examined how functional diversity can help urban forests better withstand environmental stressors such as heat, pests, disease, and climate change.

John Pedlar discussed the challenges of tree migration in a warming climate and introduced tools that can support climate-informed species selection and urban forest planning.

Together, these presentations emphasized the importance of diversity, forward-looking planning, and science-based decision-making in building resilient urban forests.

🌳 Trois visites de terrain inoubliables à la ! Ville de Québec

En octobre prochain, choisissez parmi sept visites de terrain captivantes qui donnent vie à la foresterie urbaine. Voici un aperçu de trois des expériences uniques offertes aux participants :

🚴‍♂️ 1. Rues conviviales et projets de réaménagement urbain 🚴‍♀️
Parcourez à vélo un secteur où les rues complètes et les corridors verts se rencontrent pour créer un environnement urbain plus résilient. Cette visite à vélo électrique d’environ 8 km comprend cinq arrêts mettant en valeur le verdissement, la gestion des eaux pluviales et la résilience des communautés. Terminez la journée dans une microbrasserie locale pour échanger sur vos observations et apprentissages!

🚌 2. Collaborations innovantes entre la Ville de Québec et l’Université Laval 🚌
Cette visite en autobus d’environ 8 km comprend trois arrêts et met en lumière des sites expérimentaux où les collaborations en foresterie urbaine prennent vie. Comparez différents types de fosses de plantation sur la rue Maguire, découvrez le Technosol Living Laboratory et visitez les serres universitaires où l’on développe des ormes d’Amérique résistants aux maladies.

🚌 3. Le Port de Québec : le verdissement en milieu industriel 🚌
Cette visite en autobus d’environ 20 km comprend également des visites intérieures. Profitez d’un accès privilégié à l’un des plus grands ports du Canada et découvrez comment les projets de verdissement contribuent à améliorer la qualité de l’air et à renforcer les relations avec la communauté, tout en tenant compte des réalités et des défis d’un environnement industriel.

🚴‍♂️ 1. Complete Streets and Urban Redevelopment 🚴‍♀️
Cycle through an area where complete streets and green corridors intersect to create a more resilient urban environment. This electric bike tour covers about 8 km with 5 stops, highlighting greening, stormwater management, and community resilience. End the day at a local microbrewery to discuss your insights!

🚌 2. Innovative Collaborations Between Ville de Québec and Université Laval 🚌
Conducted by bus over approximately 8 km with 3 stops, this tour showcases experimental sites where urban forestry collaborations thrive. Compare planting pit designs on Rue Maguire, explore the Technosol Living Laboratory, and visit the university greenhouses advancing disease-resistant American elms.

🚌 3. The Port of Québec: Greening in an Industrial Setting 🚌

Canada’s Urban Forestry Footprint measures the extent and intensity of urban forestry activities in Canadian municipalities and visualizes these efforts through an interactive mapping tool. 🌳🗺️

By establishing a national benchmark and visualizing the distribution of urban forestry activities, this work supports better-informed planning, research, and collaboration across the sector.

🌱 On the International Day for Biological Diversity, we’re proud to launch Tree Canada’s new Biodiversity Restoration Initiative!

This national initiative will help reverse biodiversity loss by planting native and climate-adapted trees and plants in ecologically significant areas across Canada.

In collaboration with Indigenous communities, landowners, forestry experts, and other partners, Tree Canada will restore habitats, support Species at Risk, improve ecosystem connectivity, and strengthen ecological resilience for the future.

The initiative also prioritizes ecological monitoring to better understand ecosystem recovery over time.

A special thank you to Nespresso Canada, the inaugural sponsor of the Biodiversity Restoration Initiative, for supporting this important work. 🌿

🌱 À l’occasion de la Journée internationale de la diversité biologique, nous sommes fiers de lancer la nouvelle Initiative de restauration de la biodiversité d’Arbres Canada!

On Saturday, April 18th 2026, volunteers came together in Burrard View Park to plant the Burrard View Food Forest, transforming a sunny open field into the beginning of a vibrant, community-focused space filled with edible and medicinal plants.

Designed to reflect a natural forest clearing, the food forest will support local biodiversity while helping address food insecurity. It will also serve as a space for connection and learning, with areas for children to play, places for elders to rest, and an outdoor classroom to explore native plants, food systems, and stewardship.

This project is led by the VUFFF in partnership with the Vancouver Park Board, with ongoing support from several community groups, including Eagles Inspirit Protecting Indigenous Fathers Society, Hastings Community Association, BCIT: British Columbia Institute of Technology, Capilano University, and Brinkman Group, among others. Tree Canada is proud to support this initiative through its Community Tree Grants program.

Le samedi 18 avril 2026, des bénévoles se sont réunis au parc Burrard View pour planter la forêt nourricière Burrard View, transformant un champ ouvert ensoleillé en un espace dynamique axé sur la communauté, composé de plantes comestibles et médicinales.

Conçue pour refléter une clairière forestière naturelle, la forêt nourricière contribuera à soutenir la biodiversité locale tout en aidant à lutter contre l’insécurité alimentaire. Elle servira également de lieu de rencontre et d’apprentissage, avec des espaces pour que les enfants puissent jouer, des endroits où les aînés peuvent se reposer, ainsi qu’une classe extérieure pour explorer les plantes indigènes, les systèmes alimentaires et l’intendance de l’environnement.

Ce projet est dirigé par la Vancouver Urban Food Forest Foundation en partenariat avec le Vancouver Parks Board, avec le soutien continu de plusieurs groupes communautaires, dont Eagles Inspirit Protecting Indigenous Fathers Society, Hastings Community Association, BCIT (British Columbia Institute of Technology), Université Capilano et Brinkman Group, entre autres. Arbres Canada est fier de soutenir cette initiative dans le cadre de son programme de Subventions d'arbres communautaires.
