So happy to bring our Ubuntu Legacy members and youth together again, learning side by side through food, culture, and true storytelling.

Today’s plant-based meal prep reminded me that herbs, spices, and vegetables are more than ingredients, they carry history, tradition, and wisdom. Our chef didn’t just show us how to combine flavours, she taught us the richness behind them and helped everyone understand the “why” as we cooked together.

Moments like this are exactly what Ubuntu is about: connection, learning across generations, and building community in a way that feels warm, meaningful, and rooted.

Last evening was absolutely beautiful.

I watched our members open their hearts and their space to welcome Reveille Afriq, a local business owner facing real challenges keeping her store doors open. What unfolded was pure Ubuntu in action—our community didn’t just show up, they showed *up* with warmth, thoughtfulness, and genuine care.

Our social committee came together once again to create something truly special. They embodied what we stand for: being loving, supportive, and welcoming to those around us. It was a blast, and honestly, the energy in that room reminded me exactly why this work matters.

We couldn’t have made this happen without our incredible partners. A heartfelt thank you to GTA Phoenix Lions Club and Amica Erin Mills for the generous door prizes, and to the City of Mississauga for believing in our mission to combat isolation, loneliness, and improve the wellbeing of our older adults.

When we come together, we are unstoppable. I am because we are.

There’s something magical that happens when our community comes together for a night of games, laughter, and pure joy.

From bingo wins to karaoke moments, from shared meals to genuine friendship—this is what Ubuntu Legacy is all about. Watching our members celebrate, support each other, and create memories that will last long after the night ends reminds us why we do this work.

A heartfelt thank you to Amica Erin Mills for the amazing door prizes and to GTA Phoenix Lions Club for their generous contributions that made this celebration possible. Your support means everything to us.
Of course our social committee for organizing and let’s not forget our members for showing up and supporting always

Because when we gather as one, we’re reminded: I am because we are. 💚

Celebrating Love, Legacy, and Belonging at Our Annual Mother’s Day Brunch ✨

Today, our Ubuntu family gathered in our Sunday’s best to honor the mothers, matriarchs, and heart of our community. From heartfelt conversations and shared laughter to live steel pan music that filled the room with joy, every moment reminded us why we do this work.

A special acknowledgment to our beloved elder, Hyfeleta—affectionately known as “Sweetie”—who at 86 years young is the mother of Ubuntu Legacy. Her presence, wisdom, and love continue to inspire us all. 💛

This brunch embodied what Ubuntu Legacy is truly about: creating spaces where Afro-Canadian seniors feel seen, celebrated, and connected. Where intergenerational bonds strengthen. Where cultural pride shines through in every detail—from the elegant attire to the nourishing meals we shared together.

We’re grateful to Suzanne and her father for the beautiful live steel pan performance that set the perfect soundtrack to our celebration. 🎵

If you’re seeking community, connection, and a place where you truly belong, we invite you to join Ubuntu Legacy. Become part of something larger than yourself.

Today Ubuntu’s family came together to celebrate each other’s love, grace and togetherness. We acknowledge the work you do for your families, friends and community. Today we celebrate each of you with love by showing you how much we appreciated you. Many of you still continue to be the strength of our community by showing us how you show up for yourselves.
Thank you for showing me the way.

Ubuntu Legacy Community Care is feeling deeply grateful today. After our yoga class this morning, one of our member organizations, GTA Phoenix Lions Club, presented us with a $300 cheque to sponsor our Ubuntu Game Night. Moments like this remind us that community care is not just what we do, it is what we build together.

This sponsorship helps us create a welcoming, culturally grounded space where seniors can laugh, connect, and reduce isolation through simple joy and togetherness. To the GTA Phoenix Lions Club: thank you for standing with our elders and investing in meaningful community connection.

If your organization is looking to sponsor a program that directly supports seniors wellbeing and belonging in Mississauga and Peel, we would love to partner. Learn more at www.ubuntulegacycc.ca

Proud and grateful to share this feature highlighting my work with Ubuntu Legacy Community Care and our commitment to bridging generations through culturally grounded care. At Ubuntu, we create welcoming spaces where Afro-Canadian, Caribbean, and diverse seniors feel seen, supported, and connected and where youth and elders can learn from one another through storytelling, wellness, and community programs.

Thank you to Her Roots by Nature for telling this story so beautifully. If this message resonates with you, I’d love for you to read the full piece and share it with someone who believes in healthy aging, dignity, and belonging.
