If climate and the environment are among your top issues, your choices for Halton Hills Council will become pretty clear when you review what candidates told us in a survey we sent to each of them. Please share onward!

We care how our elected politicians think and act on climate issues. We sent each local candidate in the October 26th municipal election a standard list of questions to help us understand their positions. Below are the replies we received from those who answered. Nuclear is slow to build and expensive to run: Toronto reader published in The Hill Times

Re:“Carney’s nuclear strategy ‘ambitious,’ but leaves questions about tighter regulatory regime, financing, say experts,” (The Hill Times, June 29, by Jesse Cnockaert).

The fact that the federal government plans to build out up to 10 new large reactors and expand Canada’s international nuclear technology footprint is problematic for several reasons.

It is well-known that nuclear power is the most expensive way to provide power to the electricity grid. Solar and wind are now the most affordable sources of power, and the latest advances in energy storage mean that renewable energy is now reliable.

In the midst of the current record-breaking heat dome in Europe, France has had to pause some of its nuclear power trans- mission due to the fact that the local river water used for essen- tial cooling of the reactor has become too warm.

The question then becomes: in the face of a warming planet, how reliable is nuclear really when the critical water sources for cooling are compromised by unprecedented heat waves?

The projected build-out time for the new reactors is a decade or more, yet the history of nuclear builds is littered with delays and cost overruns, while renewable solar and wind power build out
in a matter of months—not years.

The cost of renewables, both for the construction and for final power consumption is much more affordable for consumers and businesses, while providing good, skilled trades job opportunities and apprenticeships for Canadians now.

Much of the planet is going renewable. Denmark now gets 88% of its power from renewable energy. China is installing upwards of 3000 MW of solar per day. Pakistan is buying Chinese solar panels to save money and not have to rely as much on the big grid. California meets more than 50% of their electricity needs with renewables. And the list goes on.

Nuclear is slow to build and expensive to run. We don’t have time to wait for it. We don’t want to pay for it. Let’s invest our time and money in renewable energy and slow the advance of climate change while we’re at it.

From Bill McKibben- "Beginning next week, Australians across a huge swath of the continent will begin getting three free hours of electricity every afternoon—to charge their cars, runs their dishwashers, fill up a storage battery to run the house at night. Humans have spent the last 1.79 million years (according to new research last week) working hard for energy: spending time gathering firewood, spending time working to pay the power bill. Now, in one large part of the earth, for one large part of the day, electricity will be too cheap to meter. You want some abundance? Here you go.
Australia has enough solar power, and that solar power is so cheap, that now people who live there will get to have it for free. They will be, every afternoon, energy-rich. With just a little bit of care, they’ll be able to get done most of what needs doing for free."
Meanwhile in Canada, our governments are proudly announcing one mega energy project after another- nuclear, LNG, pipelines, dams. What's wrong with this picture? Again, follow the money. In some countries they are getting free energy on a daily basis that is relatively carbon free. In Canada, we're subsidizing energy megaprojects that have high carbon footprints and citizens will be paying higher energy costs as a result. 😡
