🔥 Milton is growing. Our response capacity must too.
The Fire Master Plan recommends 8 new full-time firefighters in the 2027 budget.

We’re asking Council to go further — 16 firefighters total. Milton has been playing catch up for years and now it’s time to put the safety of the p***c and it’s firefighters first!
16 new firefighters will allow us to fully staff another truck.
More firefighters. Stronger response. Safer community.

NFPA 1710 & Why 4 Firefighters Matter
NFPA 1710 is a nationally recognized standard that provides guidance for the organization, deployment, staffing, and response of career fire departments. One of its key principles is having enough firefighters arrive at an emergency to safely and effectively perform critical tasks.

With 3 firefighters on the truck:
Fewer firefighters available to perform critical tasks simultaneously.
Greater difficulty completing multiple tasks at the same time.
Less capacity to establish effective fire attack, search, ventilation, water supply and incident support.
Crews can be stretched thinner when a firefighter is injured, encounters a problem, or another emergency occurs.
Additional arriving resources may be needed before certain operations can safely proceed.

The Bottom Line
Three firefighters may get the truck there, but four firefighters get more work done when they arrive.
When seconds matter, having an additional firefighter on the first-arriving truck can mean more tasks completed sooner, greater operational capability, and a safer working environment for firefighters and the public.
Milton is growing. Emergency calls are increasing. Our staffing needs to keep pace with our community.

In Fall River, Massachusetts, a devastating fire at an assisted-living facility put both the public and firefighters in an impossible position. Eight of the city’s ten fire companies were staffed with just three firefighters—the same staffing level Milton fire trucks regularly operate with today. When lives were on the line and people were trapped, firefighters did everything they could, but as their union president said, “We did the best we could with what we had, and what we had was not enough.” We can only hope and pray that Milton never faces a tragedy of this magnitude, but hope is not a staffing strategy. The time to ensure we have enough firefighters to protect the public and each other is before the unthinkable happens—not after. The 2027 budget is upon us and the time to get more staffing is now.

NFPA 1710 dictates minimum staffing levels for career fire departments to ensure both civilian and responder safety. Understaffing poses a severe risk, as a lack of personnel prevents simultaneous ex*****on of critical fireground tasks—such as search and rescue, water supply, and ventilation—resulting in dangerous delays and higher rates of firefighter injury and fatality.

Local 3168 proudly wishes a very Happy 86th Birthday to retired Captain Murray McConnell of the Milton Fire Department!

Murray began his fire service career as a part-time firefighter in 1977 and, in 1982, became one of Milton’s first full-time firefighters. He dedicated more than 30 years to serving the community and continued giving back as a volunteer with the MFD 163 REHAB Unit.

In recognition of his outstanding commitment and dedication, Murray was awarded the Fire Services Exemplary Service Medal in 1997.

Thank you, Murray, for your decades of dedicated service to the residents of Milton and the fire service. On behalf of everyone at Local 3168, we wish you a wonderful 86th birthday filled with family, friends, and many happy memories!

Simply put, our neighbouring communities are safer than we are. Canadian communities generally have a national median of 0.9 to 1.15 career firefighters per 1,000 population. Milton is far behind this national median. Sacrificing public safety to keep costs low is not the way to do things. Milton’s Municipal Election is Monday October 26th 2026. Let’s see what candidates value emergency services.
