Kids thrive in sports, but good air quality is essential for safe play. Checking the AQHI before practices and games helps protect young lungs, especially during wildfire smoke or hot weather. On higher-risk days, reducing intensity or moving activities indoors can make a big difference.

Coaches, sport organizations, and program leaders also play a key role by building air-quality checks into their routines and adapting activities when needed. When everyone works together, kids can stay active, healthy, and safe all season long.

Monitor children’s symptoms on poor air quality days. Reduce outdoor activity and ensure that kids drink plenty of water on smoky days. Keep reliever medications on-hand for those with asthma.

Did you know?
The Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) helps Albertans understand local air quality and how it may impact their health. In 2025:
✅ 42 Alberta communities reported AQHI
✅ Most communities experienced LOW risk air quality the majority of the time
✅ AQHI updates are available throughout the day
Check AQHI before outdoor activities — especially during wildfire smoke events.

When a wildfire starts, Alberta Wildfire assigns a status to describe the fire behaviour.

Most wildfires are classified as out of control when they are first assessed but can be quickly reclassified following successful initial attack efforts.

A wildfire will remain classified as out-of-control when it is growing or expected to grow. It is possible for a wildfire to be classified as out-of-control even if it shows signs of low activity or little growth.
