Great information for those in the Milk River Area.

Great information for those in the Milk River Area.

Its been a wild year for river flows and irrigation, there are over 30 families directly reliant on ~8300 acres of licensed irrigation in Alberta from the Milk River. The open winter with nearly no snow, followed by a dry spring brought historically low water volumes with natural flow near zero without augmentation from the St Marys.

This has resulted in on and off cessation orders under the water sharing agreements, and if it wasn't for exceptional and timely rain we would be facing a lost season in Alberta.

The Water users, in partnership with Alberta Environment and Protected areas have been working closely with the IJC accredited officers to minimize impact fairly to water users in both the USA and Canada. The MRWCC has been assisting when needed on the collection of data, reporting of conditions, communications, and monitoring.

Yesterday it was approved to open back up irrigation for the remaining week of the current balancing period. Everyone will continue to monitor water use, and river conditions to determine if the system and treaty conditions will allow for a continuation after July 15th

learn more about water sharing from our Transboundary State of the Watershed Report found here: https://mrwcc.ca/resource/state-of-the-watershed-report-2013/

"In accordance with license conditions under the Water Act, and pursuant to the Boundary Waters Treaty and the 1921 IJC Order, all licensed diversions for irrigation may resume effective July 7th 2026. Irrigation will be permitted to continue until July 15, 2026 when the flows are reassessed" EPA

Notice: River flow is fast and levels are high. Follow guidelines. Take care, remember lots of critters are moving out of the way too🐾

A high stream flow advisory has been issued once again for the South Saskatchewan River through Medicine Hat. 🚫There is no anticipated risk of flooding🚫.

However, we've implemented some high river flow precautions once again. Here's what you need to know:

📈 The river level is forecasted to peak between 1,700 and 1,850 cubic metres per second on July 2.
⛔ All boat launches are closed
⛔ Low-lying trails along the river are closed
✅ Police Point Park and the Echo Dale Campground remain open

Updates will be provided once we confirm that river conditions have subsided enough to safely lift these closures.

Read our news release for more information, including a great river safety reminder from Medicine Hat Fire and Emergency Services.
