The Medicine Hat Astronomy Club operates Sunridge Observatory near Seven Persons.

Medicine Hat Astronomy Club is hosting its annual membership drive at Sunridge Observatory on Saturday, 25th October, from 7pm until 10pm.

This is a chance to come and visit the facility, ask questions, and look through some telescopes if it's clear. Amongst the many targets available, Saturn will be high and visible all evening, and the Moon will be visible for the first 45 minutes or so.

To find Sunridge Observatory, follow Highway 3 for 17km southwest of the airport, then turn right onto Range Rd 72 and head north for 1km.

Entry is $10 per person, which is discounted from the membership fee if you decide to join on the evening. The annual membership rates are $120 for a single or $180 for a family.

Refreshments will be provided.

Tomorrow, Saturday, 3rd May is International Astronomy Day and Sunridge Observatory will be open to the public from 8pm!

Entry is $10 per person, which is redeemable against a membership if you choose to join on the night. There will be solar viewing before sunset, and lunar, planetary and deep-sky viewing after dark.

Snacks and refreshments are included in the entry price.

The sky forecast is very good, so dress warmly and make it a fun evening for the family!

In celebration of International Astronomy Day, the Medicine Hat Astronomy Club is holding a public star party event at the Sunridge Observatory on Saturday, 3rd May, 2025 from 8pm.

Everyone is welcome to attend.

Admission to this event is $10 per person, which is redeemable if you purchase a membership. We will have telescope exhibits, public viewing, and a brief program for those who may be interested.

Sunridge Observatory is located on Range Rd 72, 17km south-west of the airport on Highway 3.

The weather forecast has improved, and there could now be more opportunities to see the comet than expected.

The comet is moving, and the Sun is setting earlier, so follow the instructions previously posted but check the Sun's position between 6:10 and 6:20pm, and start looking for the comet around 7:40pm. It will now be approximately two fist-widths above the horizon at that time, which also means you will have longer to see it before it sets at 9:42pm.

Each day the comet is getting higher, and setting later, but it is also dimming, so it is best to see it as soon as you can.

Here is a picture of Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS taken at Sunridge Observatory yesterday.

If you would like to see the comet, this evening might be your last chance. Choose a location where you have a clear view of the western horizon, and make a note of the direction of the Sun just before it sets. Do this between 6:20 and 6:30pm.

Start looking for the comet around 7:45pm. If you make a fist at arm's length, the widest part of your hand will be approximately 10°. Turn your wrist so your thumb is upwards, and use your fist to measure 10° above the horizon, in the same direction that the Sun was when it set. If there is no cloud there, you should start to see the comet. If you cannot see it, try again every few minutes as the sky continues to darken. If you have a pair of binoculars, they will help, but by 8:00pm, it will be easily visible with the naked-eye.

This coming Saturday, 12th October from 7:30pm, we are holding our annual Membership Open House evening. This is your opportunity to visit Sunridge Observatory, see the club, talk with members, see and look through the club’s telescopes (weather permitting, but the forecast is good) and explore a membership as an individual or family.

There is a $10 per person entry-fee (cash only please), which will be fully applied towards your membership if you choose to join on the night. Membership is $180 for a family or $120 for an individual, and will run until 31st October, 2025.

Your membership gets you a full orientation, a key to the facility, the use of the club’s loaner telescopes and the 16-inch computer-controlled telescope in the main dome, a 6-part course on amateur astronomy and the chance to participate in all club events.

The Medicine Hat Astronomy Club is a vibrant organization with many experienced members who can assist people who are new to the hobby and want to learn more.

Come out, look through telescopes, talk to amateur astronomers, see the facility, see the club’s latest projects, learn about membership, and discover the incredible things the club can offer you and your family.

A one-year membership is currently $120 for a single or $180 for a family, and if you purchase a membership on the night, the admission fee will be discounted from the price.
