Community Foundation of Southeastern Alberta

Community Foundation of Southeastern Alberta Vibrant, healthy, caring communities – today, tomorrow, forever! The original idea for the Community Foundation came from a local area rancher, Mr.

John Ignatius, who had supported other Community Foundations and sought to have a local organization provide similar community benefits. John made the first endowed donation of $25,000 and encouraged his many family, friends and colleagues to follow his example. The Medicine Hat Community Foundation was then founded in 1992 through an act of Legislature of the Province of Alberta. John passed away

in January 2000 and, true to his word, left the vast majority of his estate to the Foundation. John’s financial contribution was in excess of $2.4 million but his biggest legacy was the original creation of the Foundation which continues to support vibrant, healthy, caring communities across Southeastern Alberta – today, tomorrow, forever! The CFSEA is a non-government, non-political and non-religious independent organization that operates under the guidance of a diverse group of community-minded volunteer Board of Directors.

We join the community of Medicine Hat in mourning for the tragic loss of a child.

Our hearts go out to the family, first responders, and all who were involved.

HALO Air Ambulance was dispatched to assist the Medicine Hat Police Service with the search and rescue response on Monday, June 15.

Today, our hearts are heavy as we join our community in mourning this tragic loss. We extend our heartfelt sympathies to the child's family, friends, classmates, teachers, and all those affected by this heartbreaking event.

Our thoughts are also with the first responders, city staff, and everyone involved in the response as they navigate the impact of this tragedy alongside our community.

In moments like these, we are reminded that behind every emergency call are people, families, and communities whose lives are forever changed.

Please keep all those affected in your thoughts during this difficult time.

Congratulations to these future leaders who were the 2026 recipients of the Chief Gordon Earl Leadership Legacy fund!

On June 13, 2026, twenty-two local Grade 6 students received scholarships from the Chief Earl Leadership Legacy Fund. Established in 2008, the fund recognizes Chief Earl’s contributions to the community and honours his legacy.

Each year, elementary schools within the local school districts identify students who demonstrate the qualities of future leaders based on the four core values of the Medicine Hat Police Service, with an added emphasis on leadership and citizenship. Since the fund was established, 297 students have been recognized.

The fund is administered through the Community Foundation of Southeastern Alberta, with sponsorship from the Medicine Hat Safe Community Association and the Medicine Hat Police Association. Parents and guardians of scholarship recipients are encouraged to place the awards into an existing or newly opened Registered Education Savings Plan.
