Peonies always make me think of weddings. They’re such a romantic flower, so frilly and beautiful in shades of creamy white, soft pink or magenta. What bride wouldn’t want a bouquet of peonies? They’re even lovely when they start to decline. Every gentle breeze brings a shower of petals to the ground.

And speaking of weddings, all it takes is one good rainstorm to have your peonies looking like the bridesmaid who drank too much and didn’t catch the bouquet at the reception…

…a disappointed hot mess.

It always amazes me how fast they go from “Oooh” to “Ugh!” Yet despite their fleeting beauty, these spring flowers are a favorite among gardeners, myself included. And unlike your cousin’s wedding to that questionable guy she met on a bar crawl six months ago, peonies are in it for the long haul.

If you want them to keep showing up, year after year, with their big, blousy blossoms, now is the time to do a few post-bloom jobs... (I'll show you what they are in the comments)

We are pleased to announce the Growing Gardeners dates for this month! Join us for a free, hands-on learning opportunity for gardeners of all levels in Medicine Hat and surrounding area. We will be meeting Wednesdays June 10th, 17th and 24th in the community access garden behind the Root Cellar Food and Wellness Hub (440 Maple Avenue SE) at 7pm to talk about growing food, answer gardening questions, and help with planting/maintaining the gardens. Each session we cover a different topic and share helpful tips and resources for growing great gardens. Access and parking is available on 5th Street SE.
Growing Gardeners is Community Food Connections Association's free garden club. We are grateful for our partnership with Root Cellar Food and Wellness Hub for sharing their garden space with us. To find out more about Growing Gardeners, contact Genevieve at [email protected]
