Last month, our members had a great time corralling the JVH Rubber Ducky Race ducks as they swam down the river and out into the lake! The duckies did not succeed on their break for freedom, as members netted them from in the water and from on our rescue boat, Platypus. Did we capture all of them? We think so.

Two of our Mountain Rescue members participated with other local teams in a regional mountain rescue refresher weekend last week. There's still some snow up there! Thanks CloƩ and Jana, for the pics and the weekend spent on collaborative training.

Throwback Thursday! 4 Of our Rope Rescue Technicians traveled to Clearwater in April, to join 90+ Rope Rescue Technicians from 24+ SAR teams across the Province, at Southern Interior Rope Exercise, graciously hosted by Wells Gray Search and Rescue. Over the weekend, participants rotated through a variety of training stations and scenarios facilitated by industry rescue professionals and Rope Rescue instructors. Regional events like these, provide an excellent opportunity to network with industry and gear representatives and other SAR teams and instructors, allowing us to bring back valuable training to our team. Our rope members look forward to attending the next event in 2028!

Many skills can be required to complete one SAR task. For example, a task last month called on the skills of the Canine Team, Ground Search Members, Flatwater Rescue members, Swiftwater Members and a Management team. Each responder contributes Hundreds of hours each year, training to a professional standard, to perform their 100% volunteer duties to the best of their abilities. We are grateful for the strong and dedicated team we have!

We wrapped up our full team Swiftwater training month last week, with an awesome training session on Kaslo River. In this exercise, we belayed one of our rafts and two Swiftwater Technicians to a 'subject' in the river (a large rock!). Our Swiftwater members in the raft then disconnected the belay and rafted to the river mouth. Just how do we get a rope across the river? We use a large slingshot with a small sandbag beanie attached to thin line. With precision aiming, the beanbag is shot across the distance we need (i.e. river, canyon), a rope is attached and the line is pulled back across by the slingshot crew. Pretty awesome, eh? On this evening, the slingshot was instrumental in creating a downstream safety line and in setting up the operational rope system. A scenario like this provides a great opportunity for the Swiftwater Team and the Rope Team to work together - though many of the members share both certifications.

Last week, we responded to two Motor Vehicle Incidents, both on blind corners. As the roads get busier going into the Summer season, please drive with awareness that an accident could be just around the corner. We appreciate your patience and care when driving up to, waiting at or traveling past accidents scenes. This goes a long way towards keeping responders safer!

Last weekend, our Kaslo SAR canine team joined teams from Osoyoos, Kamloops, North Shore and Nakusp at the training camp in Osoyoos. They said it was very rewarding and exhausting, and both our canine and handler slept for many hours afterwards! Many thanks to Monique Worth for the photographs!
