Some writers tell safe stories. Sharon Ezima isn’t one of them.

At just 14, Sharon is already asking the questions most people avoid. Moral ambiguity. Systemic racism. Human nature. Freedom of speech. The kind of topics that make you think long after the last page.

Her goal? Simple. “I want my stories to leave a lasting impact.”

As the host of TVOkids’ Ainara's Bookshelf , a literacy advocate across Ontario, and a familiar face at schools, libraries, and the Forest of Reading Festival she’s been doing this work for a while now.

At 15, Kamsi Ezeonyejiaku has been a reader her whole life the kind who clears out the library shelf before the weekend is over. And somewhere between all those borrowed books, she realized she had stories of her own worth telling.

Born in Onitsha, raised in Lagos, rooted in Canada since 2015 and now, officially part of the Writers’ Room ’26 cohort.

For a lot of young writers, the hardest part isn’t writing. It’s believing their voice belongs on the page.

At Hamilton Verse, we’re committed to creating spaces where emerging writers are mentored, encouraged, and given the opportunity to see their stories in print. Because publishing a book isn’t just about ink on paper it’s about showing young people that their voices matter.

Every workshop, every draft, every conversation, and every anthology is a step toward that dream.

Applications for Writers’ Room ’26 are now closed.

We are overwhelmed with gratitude for everyone who applied, shared, and showed up, the response has been incredible.

Led by our Story Coordinator, Aisha Yusuf, author of Race to the Finish Line, Writers’ Room ’26 will bring together a new cohort of writers for a paid writing opportunity, hands-on writing mentorship, and a creative community where their voices can grow, thrive, and be heard

We can’t wait to welcome this year’s cohort and see the stories they’ll create.

Seven writers will help rebuild it.

Hamilton Verse Writers’ Room 2026 is now open and we’re looking for Black writers ages 14–25 to join us this summer.

You’ll write a 5,000-word story set in The Shards of the Mirror Tree shared universe. You choose the genre. You choose your world. We handle the rest.
