Stompede is the first show of the year for chuckwagon racing and the first big event of the outdoor season for the pro rodeo competitors. The Stompede committee is made up of 13 directors and four executive members. It is a Not-For-Profit organization. All of the proceeds from Stompede are given back to the community. Over the years Stompede has provided thousands of dollars for improvements and projects at Evergreen Park. Stompede allows local chuckwagon drivers and professional rodeo competitors to showcase their talents in their own backyard and, ultimately, promotes both sports in the Peace Country so young people are inspired to keep the tradition going

The Grande Prairie Stompede Association would like to, once again, recognize our 2026 Wagon Master, Jack Bolin.

Jack Bolin was born in 1957 in Beaverlodge, Alberta, and has resided in the Rio Grande area all his life. Jack has always enjoyed the company of horses, a trait that runs in the family, as his brother Ron raced chuckwagons, and his two sisters were barrel racers.

Jack was the outrider and horse trainer in the family. He has been an outrider at many of the stops on the WPCA circuit and even rode in Cheyenne when the wagons raced there. Along with his local event in Rio Grande, Jack also recalls races in Manning, Chetwynd, of course, Grande Prairie, and many more stops on the WCA circuit. He has been involved with the Rio Grande Rodeo in some capacity all his life.

Jack is now retired from his Project Supervisor role with Whitecap Resources, but he keeps busy breeding Alberta thoroughbreds. He has around twenty horses, along with some other boarding horses.

The Grande Prairie Stompede Association was proud to celebrate Jack as our 2026 Wagon Master. Thank you, Jack, for all you do to preserve the Western heritage.

It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to one of the true cornerstones of the Grande Prairie Stompede.

Bernie Benson dedicated more than four decades of her life to this organization. From joining as the 1979 Chuckwagon Queen (Stompede Sue) to serving as a board member, secretary, and, most recently, our Director of Volunteers, Bernie poured her heart into the Stompede and the community she loved.

Bernie was never afraid to speak her mind. She believed deeply in preserving the traditions of the Stompede while always advocating for what she felt was right. Her honesty, unwavering commitment, and fierce dedication helped shape our organization into what it is today.

More than the titles she held or the countless hours she volunteered, Bernie was a keeper of our history. She carried the stories, traditions, and spirit of the Grande Prairie Stompede, ensuring they were passed from one generation to the next. Her passion was contagious, and her presence made every board meeting, event, and volunteer gathering stronger.

While we were incredibly fortunate to celebrate Bernie's remarkable contributions during her lifetime, including her Lifetime Achievement Award, her greatest legacy is the impact she leaves on the people and the organization she cared for so deeply.

The Grande Prairie Stompede will not be the same without her. Her voice, wisdom, and unwavering dedication will be profoundly missed, but her legacy will live on in every volunteer, every event, and every tradition she helped build.

On behalf of the Grande Prairie Stompede Association, we extend our deepest condolences to Bernie's family, friends, and everyone whose lives she touched.

Her dedication, passion, and love for the Stompede will never be forgotten.
