GPYESS - Sunrise House Emergency shelter for youth ages 12-17 Staffed 24hrs/day, we provide temporary emregency shelter to youth who have become or are at risk of becoming homeless.

We work closely with each youth and (whenever possible) their family to find safe and permanent solutions. Youth access for various reasons and circumstances - parent conflict, family violence, addictions, mental health, homelessness, sexual exploitation, etc.

This Thanksgiving we were particularly thank full for this epic donation from Grains Bakery. These treats have been enjoyed not only by the youth emergency shelter youth but those renting in our loft program and community youth in the hub space. Thank you so much Grains!

🧡 **Orange Shirt Day at Sunrise House** 🧡

Today, our Sunrise House team proudly wears orange shirts in recognition of Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

We wear orange and light our building up in the same color to honour the children who were taken from their families and communities, remember those who never returned home, and recognize the lasting impacts of residential schools.

We hope September 30th 2026 encourages reflection, learning, compassion, and meaningful conversations about reconciliation. May we continue to listen, learn, and work toward a future where every child is valued, respected, and treated with dignity.

There is not much that warms our hearts more than hearing from youth who previously stayed with us. This connection was no exception and with her permission, we get to share this moment. The reason she came into shelter is not something we will share because the part of her story that is most important is what she has been able to accomplish since leaving. We share this message with everyone out there who has supported us over the years - this is our why and we believe it is yours too.

Here is what she shared:

"As of June 12th, 2026, I have completed my degree at the University of Alberta and am officially a Dental Hygienist! It has been a long journey to get here and there is no way I would have made it without the support of the Sunrise House Youth Shelter and Advancing Futures Bursary. Thinking of today’s 26-year-old me, I know it’s unimaginable for 17-year-old Me. I am deeply emotional even writing this out, but I’ve been able to provide treatment across Alberta and even internationally in the Dominican Republic!

I especially remember my first AF practitioners Kristy Jackson and Kevin Honig to my last Irene Muhigi. I remember Jodi and James from my time at the Sunrise house Youth Shelter and I still do makeup, however it’s definitely more subtle than the drag makeup I was a fan of 😅 Thank you for helping me see a future when I felt there was none. Please feel free to share with anyone there during my time at the shelter and transition house in early 2018! Know the impact you've had on my life is immeasurable, I will never forget you. My next steps are getting to work chipping away at my loans 😅
