The Wapiti River holds more secrets than you might think.

This summer, trade the ordinary for an unforgettable journey through millions of years of history with the Secrets of the Wapiti River Float. Guided by the experts at the The Philip J. Currie Dinosaur Museum, you'll drift along the Wapiti, search for fossils, explore hidden sites only accessible by water, and uncover the stories written into the landscape itself.

With riverside lunch included and museum admission waiting at the end of your adventure, this is so much more than a float trip.

Kakwa Falls Safety Reminder

Heading to Kakwa Falls this summer?

Kakwa Falls is a beautiful destination, but it is also a remote wilderness area with limited access and no nearby emergency services.

📍 Getting There

• Grande Prairie to the Two Lakes Staging Area is approximately 160 km (2.5–3 hours)
• From the Two Lakes Staging Area, it is approximately 22 km by ATV, quad, or side-by-side to reach the Kakwa Falls Day Use Area
• Road and trail conditions can change quickly due to weather, washouts, and wildlife activity

🧭 Before You Go
Leave a Trip Plan with someone you trust. Include:
• Where you're going
• Who is with you
• Your route
• Vehicle information
• Expected return time
• When to call for help if you don't check in

🎒 Pack the Essentials
Bring:
• Extra food and water
• Extra clothing
• First aid kit
• Map, compass, or GPS
• Flashlight/headlamp
• Fire-starting materials
• Emergency shelter or space blanket
• Multi-tool or knife
• Bear spray
• Sun protection
• Communication device

📡 Communication is Critical
Cell service is limited or non-existent in many areas around Kakwa Falls. Do not rely solely on your cellphone.

Consider carrying a Garmin inReach, satellite messenger, or Starlink-enabled communication system. These may be your only way to call for help in an emergency.

🚨 If You Need Rescue
Emergency resources may be two or more hours away, and that response time begins only after an emergency has been reported through agencies such as the RCMP, Grovedale Fire Rescue, or EMS.

Volunteer Search and Rescue teams must be notified, assemble at their base of operations, prepare vehicles and equipment, receive a briefing, and then travel to your location. Weather, road conditions, and terrain can add further delays.

🌙 Be Prepared for Delays
Be ready to spend an unexpected night outdoors due to breakdowns, injuries, weather, or trail conditions. Carry enough supplies to remain safe and comfortable if your trip doesn't go as planned.

🧠 Final Reminder
Leave a Trip Plan. Carry the Essentials. Have a Way to Communicate.
Be Prepared to Spend the Night.

Summer in the Grande Prairie region has a way of expanding your plans once you get here. A weekend turns into a few extra days, and the reason is usually the same. There’s more to experience than expected, and it’s all closer together than it looks on a map.

From July 24–26, 2026, the Canadian National Champions arrive for an elite weekend of competition hosted by GP Disc Golf. It brings high-level play into a landscape that already feels built for movement, focus, and time outdoors.

But the event is just one part of the experience.

This is the kind of trip where mornings can start on forest trails, afternoons shift into watching world-class disc golf unfold, and evenings settle into local food, patios, and long summer light that refuses to rush you along. The region rewards people who stay a little longer. Not just to see more, but to feel the pace change.

The terrain, the open spaces, and the summer energy all work together in a way that makes it easy to extend the stay without planning it too hard.
