Connecting!!

This summer, with our Honouring Life grant, through Primary Care Alberta( Alberta Health Services ) and under the guide of Lauren Moberly, we took youth and elders to several sites in Jasper National Park to learn their Indigenous ties and connections to the land within the park. It was a day of incredible learning of families, the significance of knowing where we come from, and that this isn't just history, this is present time connections that our youth are a part of.

We had the honor to have teachings from direct descendants and heard stories of real time living off the land in such a significantly world renowned area. We also had a ton of laughs and fun around the fire at Snaring River!!

It was a full day and a reminder of how blessed we are to have families willing to share their memories with us. Thank you

The Culture Program has had an amazing summer of learning, exploring, gathering, trips to historical sites, youth camps and day trips to the bush and we want to share a little piece of our adventures!

This will be the first post of several to update our community on the crazy great summer and fall we have had!

If you would like to know more about our culture program and/or the programs offered, please connect with us at 587-466-1046.

This post shows pictures of our staff learning traditional teachings and gathering to provide for our elders. We took numerous trips to the bush and berry patches to pick and gather for jam and tea making, smudging and learning from the land. Great days!

Next posts....youth trips and teachings!!

Come be part of our new community program!

We all have times when we are unwell and unable to cook a healthy meal, so the culture program wants to ensure that our elders are taken care of when they feel under the weather!

We will have a list of community members who are willing to make a fresh, homecooked meal for those who may need it for a few days. With many people contributing and taking care of one another we can make sure that eveyone knows that we care at the Kookums Care Kitchen!! See details on the poster if you would like to be part of the program.

On Wednesday, September 30th, National Truth and Reconciliation Day, we gathered, shared space, and honored Indian Residential School Survivors, the children who never returned home, and the families who continue to carry the legacy of Canada's actions. 🧡🧡🧡🧡

It was an impactful evening of hearing and feeling the voices of our Indigenous elders and youth, creating cultural arts and breaking bannock together. There were many conversations around meaningful steps towards reconciliation, which we look forward to creating throughout the year.

A special thank you to the Galloway Station Museum for hosting us, the Edson Eagles for the wonderful assistance before, during and after the event, our amazing youth volunteers, and to Chasity Austin for the world class bannock!!

Heartful thank you's to everyone for coming out to the event and to those that were with us in spirit 🧡
