Well, supper tonight is homemade eggnog ice cream. 😂

I've been feeling so rotten that the thought of eating an actual meal just isn't happening. How long does this cold last anyways?

But apparently my stomach is perfectly willing to negotiate when ice cream is involved.

So here I am, a grown woman having ice cream for supper, in a disposable unicorn cup and I'm not even feeling guilty about it.

At least it's homemade. That counts for something, right?

Anyone else have that one food they can manage when they're feeling absolutely miserable?

🚨 **PUBLIC SAFETY ADVISORY — PICTOU COUNTY**

**Elmsfield, Nova Scotia | October 29, 2026**

Pictou County RCMP are responding to a report of a person with a fi***rm in a wooded area near **Porter Road in Elmsfield**.

According to a public advisory shared by Nova Scotia Fire/Emergency/Info:

• Police are on scene responding to the report.

• Officers have not received reports of shots being fired.

• The public is asked to avoid the area, including nearby ATV trails, while police carry out their work.

**Please stay clear of Porter Road and the surrounding wooded areas until further information is available.**

If you know someone who lives nearby or regularly uses those ATV trails, please share this advisory with them.

For emergencies, call 911.

We'll share any confirmed updates as they become available.

Every year I convince myself that making Christmas gifts will be cheaper.

Every year I forget to factor in the cost of supplies, the mess, the swearing and the three trips back to the store.

And somehow, every year, I do it again. 😂

Anyone else have a Christmas craft that started out as a lovely idea and ended up testing every last nerve?

❤️ YARMOUTH, WHAT A WONDERFUL WAY TO SPREAD A LITTLE CHRISTMAS KINDNESS!

Halloween isn't even over, and Souls Harbour Rescue Mission is already working to make Christmas brighter for people in the community.

Their goal? **A filled Christmas stocking for every guest attending their December 23 Christmas meal!**

And here's what I love most. You don't need a big budget to help.

They're looking for new socks, gloves, shampoo, deodorant, hand warmers, candy, small gifts and Christmas stockings.

You can fill an entire stocking, donate a few items or organize a collection with coworkers, friends or a community group.

🕘 Drop-offs: 9 a.m.–3 p.m.
📅 Deadline: December 11, 2026

Pickup may be available for larger donations in Yarmouth and Clare.

All items must be new, unused and packaged. Leave filled stockings unwrapped or untied.

Sometimes a pair of warm socks, a few toiletries and a little something sweet can remind someone that their community cares.

And that's the kind of Christmas spirit I love seeing across Atlantic Canada.

PICTOU, ARE WE FOCUSING ON THE RIGHT THINGS?

With the pylons, construction and ongoing changes around the Town of Pictou, I have to wonder if our priorities could have been different.

Should the town have focused more on attracting businesses to the rotary area?

Think about the opportunities for shops, restaurants, services and businesses that could give both residents and visitors more reasons to stop and spend money locally.

I'm not saying infrastructure improvements aren't important. They absolutely are.

But I do wonder whether more attention could have been given to encouraging business development and making Pictou a place people stop in, rather than simply drive through.

We hear so much about supporting local businesses, but we also need to create opportunities for new ones to open and succeed.

So I'm curious, Pictou County.

Would you rather see continued investment in the improvements being made, or more effort put into attracting businesses around the rotary?

And what business would you actually like to see open there?

I'd love to hear from residents, business owners and people who regularly travel through Pictou.

🤡 FROM PICTOU TO THE BIG TOP!

Did you know a boy from Pictou, Nova Scotia, went on to entertain audiences across North America as a professional circus clown?

Meet George William “Twitter” Johnston (1889–1962).

As a youngster, he reportedly practised acrobatics on piles of bark at a local tannery.

By around 1906, he was performing, eventually travelling across North America with connections to Barnum & Bailey, Ringling Brothers, vaudeville and the Bill Lynch Shows.

But here's something I didn't know!

In 1953, *Billboard* magazine reported plans for Twitter to launch his own travelling circus from Pictou with his sons Robert and Richard!

Whether Johnston Bros.' Circus and Museum ever toured remains a mystery.

And Twitter apparently had quite the sense of humour. One story recalls him taking children to the beach in the back of an old hearse!

**SO WHY DO PEOPLE STILL TALK ABOUT HIM?**

His unusual clown-themed gravesite at Haliburton Cemetery in Pictou has fascinated visitors for decades.

I've visited it myself, and the photos accompanying this post are ones I took during my visit.

His life even inspired Pictou County musician Dave Gunning to record *Twitter's Song* in 2004.

And apparently, Twitter was working on an autobiography when he died. The unfinished manuscript hasn't been located.

**Imagine the stories we're missing!**

That's why I'm starting this series, *Small Towns, Extraordinary Talent*.

There are remarkable people from little communities all across Atlantic Canada whose stories deserve to be remembered.

🔥 **WILDFIRE BURNING AT CFB GAGETOWN IN NEW BRUNSWICK — MILITARY SAYS NEARBY COMMUNITIES ARE NOT AT RISK**

A wildfire broke out Wednesday, October 28, in the northeastern section of the training grounds at Canadian Forces Base Gagetown, near Oromocto, New Brunswick.

The Department of National Defence says the fire is being monitored and there is currently no threat to surrounding communities.

**Here's what we know as of Thursday morning:**

- Wildland Fire Management Services is monitoring the fire.
- Military training near the affected area has been suspended as a precaution.
- No military personnel are in the affected area.
- Residents in surrounding communities may notice smoke.
- The public is being reminded not to enter the military training grounds.
- Flying drones over the training area is prohibited because they could interfere with emergency operations.

This comes less than two weeks after the devastating October 17 fire at CFB Wainwright in Alberta that claimed the lives of four Canadian soldiers and injured dozens more.

Thankfully, no injuries have been reported in connection with the Gagetown fire.

The clouds look like actual waves crashing over the moon tonight. It's one of the strangest, prettiest things I've seen in the sky lately.

A horror movie filmed right here in Pictou County, and how many of us didn't even know about it?

Yesterday, we shared the story of *Fallen Angel: End Times*, a locally created horror-thriller filmed in Westville, Nova Scotia.

Tonight, October 28, was the special Halloween pre-screening in New Glasgow!

And now I'm curious.

Did anyone go? Was it worth seeing? Did you recognize any local locations or faces?

We hear plenty about the big productions coming to Atlantic Canada, but I think it's time we gave our own filmmakers a little more attention.

I'd love to make local film discoveries a regular feature here.
