The Somerset Bridlewood Community Association with sponsors and partner the City of Calgary has established a Community Garden for the residents of the Somerset Bridlewood Community. Inquiries about garden bed rentals may be made to [email protected].

Community Gardens: Fruit Tree Pruning Demonstration
Saturday, October 24
Does your Community Garden have fruit trees? Do you require a refresher on pruning?
If so, then join us for a demonstration by Bartlett Tree Experts on how to prune your trees to increase production, keep the size manageable, and ensure the overall health of your trees.
St. Barnabas Community Garden's apple and plum trees have been espaliered along their fence line, which will be a perfect venue for learning what (and what not) to do.

A timely tip if you are growing tomatoes!

Are you having trouble with your tomato plants setting fruit? Potassium (potash) is the macronutrient that helps with this function. If you are consistently fertilizing your plants as they grow to maturation, your issues with fruit set should be minimized. Regular applications of compost will work nicely. If you are using synthetic fertilizers, ensure they are not too nitrogen-rich, as that will promote foliage growth instead of benefiting fruit production.

One of our gardeners is growing both black and red raspberries and sent me this photo! I have heard that the black ones are usually sweeter in flavour than the red varieties.

Did you know that refrigerating your tomato harvest will diminish that delectable fresh-picked flavour? Tomato fruit continues to produce aromatic volatile compounds after picking and throwing them into a cold environment slows that production. For the very best flavour, store your newly-gathered tomatoes at around 18 degrees Celsius.
