The Afghan cultural and Educational Society of Calgary successfully hosted a vibrant and memorable event to celebrate Eid al-Fitr and Nowruz. Over 300 participants, including men, women, elders, and children, joined the festivities. Members from Action Dignity, the Centre for Newcomers, as well as participants from the Nigerian and Eritrean communities, actively contributed to the event.
Messages of congratulations were sent by Jeromy Farkas the Mayor of Calgary and Ward 5 Councillor Raj Dhaliwal, extending their greetings to all attendees on these special occasions.
The celebration featured short speeches, traditional Afghan music, and cultural performances, highlighting the richness of Afghan heritage. Speakers emphasized unity, mutual respect, and adherence to the law among Afghans living in Canada.
Unfortunately, the event was disrupted by three unidentified individuals who sprayed a harmful substance among the attendees, causing psychological and physical distress for some. The community leadership promptly informed the police, and the case is now officially registered to ensure those responsible are held accountable.
This event reflects the spirit of Afghan culture, togetherness, and resilience in Calgary, bringing the community together to celebrate and honor their traditions.
