🌿 Our Nature Playground is OPEN! 🌿

There’s so much more to explore outside for our Early Years students! Our revitalized Nature Playground opened last week, giving our Nursery through Kindergarten students a beautiful new space to play, discover, imagine and learn.

Designed with little explorers in mind, the space encourages movement, hands-on discovery and plenty of unstructured play, all while connecting our youngest Hawks with the natural world. 🐦🌱

A huge thank you to the Bondar Family, the Jewish Community Foundation of Calgary and the Groberman Family for helping bring this special space to life.

We can’t wait to watch our students explore, create and make this playground their own! 💙

Our Grade 3 students spent a beautiful day at the Leighton Art Centre last week, stepping outside the classroom for a day of hands-on learning, creativity and discovery.

Students explored the art centre and its surroundings, learning about art, nature and the history of the land. They also had the opportunity to try traditional weaving, getting hands-on with the process and creating something of their own.

It was a wonderful way to connect classroom learning with real-world experiences, while giving students the chance to explore, create and learn together.

✨ ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT: MORIAH & DAVID SAMCHEK ✨

CJA Classes of 2017 & 2023 | Grade 9 Graduates

Two siblings, two different paths, and a shared foundation at the Calgary Jewish Academy. 💙

🔬 Moriah’s love of science began with six years of CJA science fairs. After earning her biomedical engineering degree at the University of Calgary, she now works as a clinical development engineer at a surgical robotics company in England. She has also given back through Hebrew school teaching and helping restart the Dorshei Tzedec Teen Philanthropy Program alongside fellow alumna Hannah Silver.

Reflecting on her CJA teachers, Moriah says they “were always willing to create opportunities to help you succeed.”

⚽ David carried his passion for athletics from CJA’s playground and gym to SAIT, where he studies business and plays men’s soccer. His Grade 9 trip to Israel deepened his connection to his Jewish roots, while Model UN helped build his public speaking skills. Through BBYO, he has become a leader and mentor, welcoming the next generation into the community.

Connection, community and compassion continue to guide both siblings, values shaped by their years at CJA and their late father, Alan Samchek. His legacy lives on through the CJA Alan Samchek Memorial Award for Outstanding Commitment in Athletics, recognizing athletic ability, commitment and leadership.

We’re proud to celebrate Moriah and David as they carry these values into their communities and futures. 🌟

Our Grade 4 and 5 students spent the day exploring The Confluence, discovering the history, stories and natural environment connected to this special place in Calgary.

Students had the opportunity to learn about the land where the Bow and Elbow Rivers meet, explore the area, and make connections between what they are learning in the classroom and the history and community around them.

It was a great day to get outside, ask questions, explore and learn together. Experiences like this help bring learning to life and give students a deeper understanding of the place we call home.

This morning, our Junior High students came together to reflect on October 7 and remember the lives that were lost.

Students heard personal stories about people whose lives were taken that day, taking time to listen, learn and honour their memories. The stories helped bring a deeply personal perspective to the events and reminded us of the importance of remembering each individual life and the people and families forever changed.

We were also honoured to hear from Dotan Rousso, who shared the story of his nephew, Ofek, speaking about his courage, his sacrifice and the impact he continues to have on those who knew and loved him.

It was a morning of reflection, remembrance and learning, giving our students space to listen, ask questions and carry these stories forward with compassion and care.

May the memories of those who were lost be a blessing. יהי זכרם ברוך

Today, we pause to remember October 7 and honour the lives forever changed by that day. We remember those who were killed, those still held hostage, the survivors, and the families who continue to carry unimaginable loss.

May their memories be a blessing, and may we continue to stand together in hope for peace, safety and a better tomorrow.

These Hawks are already showing what it means to be a team, working hard, having fun, encouraging one another and building their skills together. It’s been amazing to watch their teamwork, confidence and connections grow with every practice and game.
