Other provinces support residents through:
• Funded IVF programs
• Refundable tax credits
•Funding support through grants, subsidies, and reimbursement programs

Alberta is coming up short on all of these.

Over 80% of Albertans surveyed supported a publicly funded IVF program or refundable tax credit. The public appetite is clear. The policy gap is clear.

What’s needed now is action.

In Alberta, facing fertility challenges to build a family can mean:
• $15,000–$20,000 per cycle
• Draining RRSPs and emergency funds
• Going into debt
• Stopping treatment before you’re ready — because the money ran out

This doesn’t seem fair.

Infertility is a disease. Everyone deserves a to have family.

Tell someone about this today. A friend, a family member, a colleague. The more people who understand what some Albertans are going through, the bigger the chance we have to change it.

A single IVF cycle involves:
+8–14 days of hormone injections
+5–7 monitoring appointments
+Egg retrieval procedure
+Embryo transfer – a second procedure – and recovery
+A two-week wait that is mentally and emotionally draining.
Then layer on top of this, no medical funding alongside workplaces with no policies for fertility treatments. In turn, employees use sick days, vacation time, or simply aren’t honest about why they’re absent.
One day, we hope Albertans can access:
→ Government funding for the fertility care they need
→ Dedicated fertility leave policies through employers
→ Flexible scheduling at work for appointments
→ Mental health coverage that includes fertility counselling

2–3 years of treatments. Tens of thousands of dollars out of pocket. Countless appointments, injections, and emotional setbacks.
And most Albertans do this completely alone — no government support, no employer coverage.

Other provinces are provide the following support:
• British Columbia: Funds 1 IVF cycle
• Saskatchewan: 50% refundable Fertility Tax Credit
• Manitoba: up to 40% refundable Fertility Tax Credit
• Ontario: Funds 1 IVF cycle and a tax credit
• Quebec: Funds 1 IVF cycle and a tax credit
• New Brunswick: Reimburses up to $20,000
• Nova Scotia: 40% refundable Fertility Tax Credit
• PEI: Reimburses up to $10,000
• Newfoundland & Labrador: Reimburses up to $20,000

Alberta: $0 in public funding for the treatment of medically diagnosed infertility.

This isn’t about lifestyle choices. Infertility is a medical condition, and right now, too many Albertans are being forced to choose between foregoing the care they need to have children or taking on debt for the chance to build a family.

* 23% waited 6–12 months to begin treatment.
* 12% waited over a year… and some more than two.

Financial barriers and geographic barriers compound each other. For Albertans outside major centres, the system isn’t just costly. It’s inaccessible.
