It happened again. Another incident has left a horse seriously injured at the 2026 Calgary Stampede.
During a Calgary Stampede chuckwagon race on July 11, 2026, a horse suffered serious injuries after two teams collided while attempting to round the barrels. The incident again highlights the inherent risks of chuckwagon racing; by far the deadliest animal event at the Calgary Stampede, with one death of a horse used in chuckwagon racing occurring for every 4.9 race days since 1986.
These are not rare accidents. Animal deaths happen at the Stampede almost every year.
In 2025, a horse named Rider suffered a fracture to his left-front cannon bone during a chuckwagon race. He was euthanized.
Again and again, animals are put at risk in rodeo and chuckwagon events for public entertainment. They can experience fear, stress, pain, injury, and death.
The Calgary Stampede does not need animal suffering to celebrate community, heritage, or culture.
A safer, kinder Stampede is possible.
