👋 Meet the latest addition to the Embark Team - Ria (she/her) ✨

📸 As our Photographer & Videographer, Ria prepares visual content to highlight the impact of Embark's programming, engage our student members, and reflect the organization's mission, vision, and values.

"Hi everyone! My name is Ria (she/her). I am an exchange student from Prague, originally from Ukraine. Here at SFU, I’m studying interactive media and arts, while doing photography and video on the side. I also hold a Bachelor's degree in media and communications and have a background in digital marketing. With my position as Photographer & Videographer, I want to create beautiful, engaging content from our events to showcase Embark’s goals and show why our work matters. Through these visuals, I want to help more people discover our organization, spark interest, and inspire even more students to join our community and spread the message of sustainability further! See you at our upcoming events!"

Here to help us dive deep into what it truly means to build movements that last is for Day 3 is Chantelle Spicer!

Chantelle’s reflective and discussion-based workshop, “Understanding Our Place Within and Across Social Justice Movements” challenges participants to consider their positionality, power, and access when envisioning their role in movements. Chantelle’s diverse leadership and dedication to Indigenous sovereignty + cross-movement care will help participants translate these insights into active, intersectional solidarity!

We are thrilled to be joined by Yi Chien Jade Ho 何宜謙 and Kabir for our final workshop of Day 2!

In their workshop “Building Communities of Organizers: Where Can Organizing Begin and How Does it Grow into a Movement?”, this dynamic duo will teach us how to turn ideas into change by sharing the process of organizing from the ground up!

Yi Chien Jade Ho 何宜謙 and Kabir bring unique perspectives through their experiences with neighbour-based organizing in Chinatown and the Downtown Eastside. We can’t wait to have them this July 28!

Starting us off for Day 2 are two incredible long-time Black student organizers, Balqees Jama and Giovanni HoSang!

In their workshop, “Mobilizing Student Power”, participants will learn how to break down an issue, power map allies and decision-makers who can move demands forward, and turn strategy into real, actionable tactics.

Balqees and Giovanni have both led several victorious student campaigns, from saving student spaces to divestment from fossil fuels. They can’t wait to share lessons from years of organizing to help participants turn ideas into real change.

Joining us to lead the final workshop at Day 1 of the Organizers’ Bootcamp are Embark’s Co-Directors, Serena Bains and Marie Haddad!

This dynamic duo will build upon the struggles, victories, and lessons of the movements that came before us in their workshop "Power is in Remembering: Movement Memory, Archives & Organizing for the Future."

Marie and Serena have several combined years of experience organizing at SFU. They look forward to bringing their wealth of knowledge to show participants how to build strategies around archiving, documentation, and preserving institutional memory!
