WUSC SFU works toward sponsoring youth aged 18-25 (who have had their education interrupted by conflict and persecution) to pursue post-secondary education in Canada under the 'Student Refugee Program' The WUSC Local Committee at Simon Fraser University sponsors student refugees to further their education at SFU, and carries out WUSC's development and international campaigns.

🧡 September 30 | National Day for Truth and Reconciliation ♥️

Today, we honour the children who never returned home and the Survivors of residential schools, alongside their families and communities. We recognize the lasting impacts of the residential school system on First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples.

This is a day for remembrance, reflection and learning, and a reminder that reconciliation requires ongoing commitment and meaningful action.

Wear orange shirt to honour residential school Survivors, their families, and the children who never returned home, and reaffirm our ongoing commitment to reconciliation. Listen to Indigenous voices. Learn more about the Truth & Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action. Support Indigenous-led initiatives and carry these commitments into our classrooms, workplaces and communities, today and throughout the year.

Annual Kayaking Event 2026 🌊🛶

On September 26, WUSC SFU and WUSC UBC came together for our annual kayaking event, a day filled with community, connection, and lots of great memories!

We were especially happy to welcome Mohammad Aljamous Jamous - محمد الجاموس Senior Program Officer with WUSC’s Student Refugee Program, who supports Local Committees across Western Canada. Thank you, Mohammad, for making the trip to join us and spend the day with our community. We truly appreciated it!

A special thank you to Sukba Kichen سُكبة | SUKBA for helping make the day even more special and for bringing everyone together over delicious Mediterranean Syrian food.

Throughout the day, we enjoyed kayaking, played football, shared food, and, most importantly, had the chance to connect, laugh, and create memories together.

And a big thank you to Fatima Timo - تيمو 🌻 for being behind the camera and capturing these beautiful moments throughout the day! 📸

We’re grateful to everyone who joined us and to Connexion Campus Connection for the continued support of Local Committees and the Student Refugee Program. We look forward to continuing to build connections between our WUSC communities and creating many more memories together. 💙

It was a pleasure bringing our community together for an afternoon of great food, meaningful conversations, and new connections. Events like these provide an opportunity to strengthen our community, welcome new faces, and create lasting memories.

🌎 World Refugee Day 2026

Today, June 20, we recognize World Refugee Day, an international day designated by the United Nations to honour the courage, resilience, and strength of refugees around the world.

This year’s theme, “Until Everyone Is Safe,” reminds us that safety is a fundamental human right. It is a call to stand in solidarity with the millions of people who have been forced to flee their homes due to war, persecution, violence, climate-related disasters, and other crises.

More than 117 million people worldwide have been forcibly displaced. Behind every number is a story of courage, hope, and determination—a family seeking safety, a student pursuing education, a parent rebuilding a future, and communities striving to recover from unimaginable challenges.

For 75 years, the 1951 Refugee Convention has helped protect the rights of refugees and uphold the principle that no one should be returned to a place where their life or freedom is at risk. Today, that promise remains as important as ever.
As UN Secretary-General António Guterres reminds us:

“We call for stronger support for all those forced to flee, as well as the countries and communities hosting them.”

💙 Standing with refugees means:
* Supporting their right to seek safety
* Building welcoming and inclusive communities
* Promoting access to education, healthcare, housing, and employment
* Amplifying refugee voices and experiences
* Advocating for dignity, protection, and opportunity for all

At WUSC SFU, we recognize the contributions, talents, and leadership of refugees and newcomers in our communities. We remain committed to fostering belonging, inclusion, and meaningful support for those rebuilding their lives in safety.

This World Refugee Day, let us choose compassion, solidarity, and action.

Until everyone is safe, the work is not done.
