🌎 World Refugee Day 2026
Today, June 20, we recognize World Refugee Day, an international day designated by the United Nations to honour the courage, resilience, and strength of refugees around the world.
This year’s theme, “Until Everyone Is Safe,” reminds us that safety is a fundamental human right. It is a call to stand in solidarity with the millions of people who have been forced to flee their homes due to war, persecution, violence, climate-related disasters, and other crises.
More than 117 million people worldwide have been forcibly displaced. Behind every number is a story of courage, hope, and determination—a family seeking safety, a student pursuing education, a parent rebuilding a future, and communities striving to recover from unimaginable challenges.
For 75 years, the 1951 Refugee Convention has helped protect the rights of refugees and uphold the principle that no one should be returned to a place where their life or freedom is at risk. Today, that promise remains as important as ever.
As UN Secretary-General António Guterres reminds us:
“We call for stronger support for all those forced to flee, as well as the countries and communities hosting them.”

* Supporting their right to seek safety
* Building welcoming and inclusive communities
* Promoting access to education, healthcare, housing, and employment
* Amplifying refugee voices and experiences
* Advocating for dignity, protection, and opportunity for all
At WUSC SFU, we recognize the contributions, talents, and leadership of refugees and newcomers in our communities. We remain committed to fostering belonging, inclusion, and meaningful support for those rebuilding their lives in safety.
This World Refugee Day, let us choose compassion, solidarity, and action.
